its probably a chewed cord if the room its in is messy or somthing might have been spilled on it or it might be all the dust thats in it because my xbox 360 did the same thing because of the dust

From the description you have provided, the microprocessor controller ic is failing which is the brains for the whole system. I suggest repacing the complete unit rather than have it repaired because it would not be cost effective.

Google the make and model of your remote and add codes to the end.

This canbe due to many faults and need a full check up but I can fill up with few tips.
1. if the cassette loads and the take up spool does not turn then the machine will shut and rewind.
2. If the take up spool rotates but then it shuts down then the reel sensor at the bottom of the forward wheel can be faulty- there are opto devices or proximity sensors/magnetic type.
3. If the drum does not rotate it will shut down as well a fault in the SERVO section.
4. Defective HALL IC can shut the switching and so the servo will shut down the processor.
5. fault in the power section to deliver the correct voltage to the circuits/loading servo to take up.
6. Finally if the loading is not to the MODE swittch point or failure of mode can make the loading to trip back to rest.

Unless you posted this question in the wrong category, you can't use the Sansui VRDVD4000 to record to DVD. It is a DVD player only, not a DVD burner. It will play and record VHS tapes, but with DVDs it will only play them.

To record to a DVD, you would need a DVD burner. Many modern computers include a DVD burner, so maybe either your computer or someone you know's computer has a DVD burner.

few small things to try. Turn off unit, unplug for 5 minutes, plug back in, turn unit on.

There is a product called a cd/dvd lens cleaning disc. Worth the investment to have around.

Some DVD players simply will not read/play home made dvd's, or dvd copies.

Select the Audio mode in Player remote control. On selecting the Audio mode 5.1, u will get all speakers to work. Cheers..

There should be a DVD/VCR button on the remote control which will toggle the machine from one playback source to another. If she has pressed the VCR button then the machine will only playback tapes & not show DVD's. Press this button & the DVD's should play. If you look closely at the front window of the machine it will show what mode it is in ie VCR or DVD, set this for the DVD to get it to play.

Check the optival pick up unit

Some DVD drives are picky about the discs you put in them or they may not have a dvd drive in their computer.

Did you finalise the disc. If not try that. These older units were made before there were a lot of "homade" DVD's and were never designed to play them. Sorry. Hope this is of some help.
