You may simply be overdriving the clean channel and causing it to "flat top" . See if it occurs when you back the gain down a bit. New tubes PROBABLY will not help and be a waste of money. The back doesn't come off. On the back beside the cord hookup and beside Channel 1 Input are screws. You unscrew the two screws on either side. You then have four screws on the top of the amplifier. Unscrew those four screws and pull them out, six screws in total, then the amplifier will pull right out.
