You cannot fix it but you can replace it. Pureland supply is who I usually use but there are other companies out there.

You have to "Toggle" your PC to output the signal to the projector.

On which "F" key do you see "CRT/LCD" or a pictute that looks like a monitor?

Yes this is very doable with current technology available. You will need a nice camera in addition to your projector. Most nicer cameras have an output of either s-video or rca that will allow you to carry the video seen through the camera to the projector. You will simply plug the output of the camera into the input of your projector. You will only be able to travel with the camera as far as your cord will reach though... You may consider doing a test run at someone else's house or while your husband is gone to see the setup process and limitations of this setup.
