Common Problem #1) Convergence has gone out

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

There is a kit available to repair the convergence circuit...this is a convergence problem...I've seen a number of these sets where the convergence IC's go bad over time...this set is about 8 years old and about time for these components to wear out...you can go to tvrepairkits.com where you can get the parts for 65.00

all you will then need to do is either replace the parts yourself or have someone who knows about electronics and soldering to install the parts. Once the parts are installed you may need to go to the setup menu and reset the convergence(the crosshatch thing you adjusted)...here you are looking to get as perfect of a white line and as straight and uniform as possible

You have several problems going on here. First I will address the brightness which is interrelated with the color problem. You have no blue. Either the gun is dead or there is no drive. Since blue makes up about 20 percent of the color and brightness you will notice a decrease in brightness. The fact that you have only yellow and green says that the gun is not working. It could be the gun is bad or the video signal to the gun is not there. Solution #1

You need to replace the convergence chips and convergence resistors. Check the site www.TvRepairKits.com. They have put together convergence repair kits for most models.

The kits include a photo instruction guide, original OEM Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, pico fuses, thermal paste, etc. Everything you will need to do the repair yourself.

Below exploded view of inside tv taken from related service manual indicates convergence output ICs location in tv, you will see three big ICs of same number (STK4274) mounted along with heat sink, each IC controls each color tube convergence (it is rear projection tv that has three basic color tubes)
IC circuit number (IKxx) and relevant convergence color tube is mentioned below.

1- ik04 stk4274 for red tube
2- ik05 stk4274 for green tube
3- ik06 stk4274 for blue tube

Since Blue convergence is not working properly so replace IK06 chip to fix this problem.
Soldering work is required for chip replacement so if you have good soldering skills then do it yourself or call local tv repairman for that job.

If the green one has failed the others will be on their way out and I wouldn't entertain a repair, purely for financial reasons.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the tv settings then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.



You should be able to move them up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

What you will need to do is replace the coolant and clean the crt. You can get a repair kit from www.TvRepairKits.com that includes replacement coolant, photos. instructions, etc

The processor on the Hitachi goes crazy sometimes, and if you unplug it again from the wall for 40 MIN., it should start working correctly. The way it looks is because the coolant might nee to be change in the CRT's There is a algery that grows in the green and blue guns, that needs change, and you are looking at around 250 on changing the coolant.

Hi, Try the auto convergence or auto focus to eliminate the problem, if this does not work, you may have to get the TV repaired, the common problem are the power amplifiers that correct the color convergence, that is why you get color shades or ghosts in the images.

Something inside is drawing too much current or a supply voltage is out of spec., so either the power supply is turning itself off to prevent further damage, or the micro-controller is shutting it down for the same reason.

The first step is to check the diodes on the secondary side of the main power transformer (the standby power circuit is probably OK, or you would not be able to turn it on). If you don't find any problems in the power supply, check the horizontal output transistor to make sure it isn't shorted. These are the most common failure points, and they can be checked with an ohmmeter. After that, you may have to watch each power supply output with an oscilloscope while you turn it on. Look for one that fails to come up to operating voltage or has excessive ripple. It's either overloaded or has a fault.
