Oreck XL Ultra Bagged Upright Vacuum Questions & Answers
Blue plastic bag holder on oreck upright detached - how to put it back in?
Amy, not sure from your description whether the outer part is what came off or the smaller, inner part came off. If it is the outer part, all you need to do is squeeze the two prongs of the inner part of the bag holder together and slip the two pegs into the holes on the outer part of the holder. If the inner part came off then you have to spread it, so that it will go over the opening on the handle, and then follow the directions I gave to install the outer part. Hope this helps.
The bags keep falling off
The nozzle pictured upon which the bag holder mechanism broke on my machine. Took it to Oreck dealership twice and he kept replacing the bag holder, but mostly trying to sell me a new vac.
Problem was, the bag holder mechanism itself was no longer attaching to the exhaust port because a major portion of the attachment device simply went missing. Notice that in the pics I post there is obviously something missing. A product failure. We don't abuse our stuff.
Solution? I drilled two small holes on either side of the bag holder mechanism and then fed a very small zip tip around the mechanism and around the plastic cloth bag holder support so it can no longer disconnect. Key to this is to feed the zip tie from behind the plastic cloth bag holder support so that the fat part of the zip tie does not interfere with the connection of the bag support to the bag holder.
Here's a pic of what I did.
Why is it hard to push?
Lester,
It could be a couple of things, first, I would remove the five screws that hold your base plate on and look at your brush. At each end of the brush you have a bearing block and there are two different height settings. If you see several "hash" marks on the top of the block, it is in the new setting position and you need to rotate the block 180 degrees so that there is only one "hash" mark showing and then put the brush back on and put the belt back in place and replace the base plate and screws and then try the vacuum and see if that helps. If you only see the one "hash" mark when you take the base plate off, then you need a new brush roller. This would also be a good time to put in a new belt as well if you have not replaced in in a while. You could also have a problem pushing your vacuum if you recently replaced your carpet and you have a real thick pile. Oreck does make a high pile attachment that can be mounted on the bottom of most of their models, but you will need your model number so that you get the right one. Hope this helps!
Adjust height for plush carpet
The best solution is to change your method of trying to push the vacuum. The more upright the handle is on an Oreck, the harder it will be to push. The lower the angle (the closer the handle is to the carpet) the easier it will be to push. There will be a huge difference. Use a straight stiff arm that is pointed directly down towards the carpet. Use your shoulder and have a near locked elbow. The vacuum will now push easily.
Orek very hard to push
The key to pushing an Oreck is to use as low an angle of the handle as is possible. The more upright the handle, the harder it is to push. The closer to the floor that the handle is, the easier the machine is to push.
Suction problem
Probably have a clog some where in the base and that is what causes it to throw stuff back out.
Oreck xl vacuum smells
You can wash the outer cloth bag by soaking it overnight in water with a mild soap solution and then rinse well and hang it up to air dry. Make sure that it is dry before you run it again.
Oreck brush only turns a tiny bit and belt pulley get hot and smells bad
Sounds like you probably have a brush issue since it does not turn very much. I would pull the brush and take the bearings off each end if you can and look to see if there is a build up of hair or string around the bearing shaft. If you see that and can clean that out that might help. If you cannot get to the bearings you may just have to purchase a new brush roller.
