The lighted display has started to darken - cannot
This problem is not depending on a kind of LED or bulb. The reason is that the display is a VFD (Vacuum Fluorescent Display) with no additional illumination.
The most common problem with VFD is, that the heater of the VFD is going bad. You can't change it because it is built-in. For experienced repairman it is possible to higher the heater voltage or the anode supply to gain the brightness a bit. But thats a tricky thing.
Sometimes it may help to clean the display cover from inside. This is what you can do first. The reason for getting dark by dust inside the cover is that the VFD is working with a anode voltage wich is a bit higher (about 30V - 50V). This sucks the very fine dust electrostatically into the casing.
To clean up the protective display cover from inside, remove the casing and also the cover in front of the VFD and clean the dsplay protection cover (the VFD istself is usually clean). Maybe that's it - but maybe not (that means the VFD is going bad).
Hope it helps.

LED display has gone dark
Check if the display you this coming cathode voltage, which is 5VAC, chances are that there is this voltage, follows the line of this voltage, possibly find some open fuse. luck.

I have an AIWA AV-X120
In this receiver the display is a digitron type: the badges, letters and numbers are created by a fluorescent paint applied on a set of electrodes encased in a vacuumed glass box - basically an improved version of a nixie tube.
Because of they way it's build the display ages over time, like a tube of a tv - the fluorescent paint wears out. Because of that it can't be repaired or regenerated. And since the production of displays of this kind has stopped long ago there are no replacements.
You will have to try to find a defective unit with a good display and have it swapped - search for it in used goods shops and sites. If you can't locate one use your unit as is for as long as you can then buy a new one.

Aiwa Z-L700 cassette player will not work but CD player is fine. Is there a simple solution please?
The complexity of the solution depends on the problem. The drive belt or pinch roller may be worn or have a hardened surface. If the tape doesn't turn at all or only very slowly in any function, verify that the tape drive motor is running and that the belt is turning the pulley(s). If the tape tends to tangle up, check the pinch roller. Sometimes cleaning the roller with a cotton swab dampened with rubbing alcohol will work, but if it's too hardened, you'll need to use rubber conditioner or replace it.
If nothing at all happens when you select the tape function, there may be an electrical problem such as a dirty contact on the function switch or a broken wire in the tape mechanism.
This is far from a comprehensive repair guide; it only covers the most common issues other than broken plastic parts. "Will not work" is too general to provide more than that. Cleaning the pinch roller and its drive pin can be done through an open cassette door; everything else most likely requires taking stuff apart, observing operation and perhaps making voltage measurements.
