The sound amplifier IC has went bad and needs replaced. Call a good TV Tech.
Check with the BBB 1st before you decide on one.

Normal color picture is composed with 3 colors R-G-B (Red-Green-Blue). Picture turns Red means: Missing Green and Blue colors (many reasons: bad contacts, projector tubes dead, and other...). Try to give some "tabs" to diagnose ... I don't know what is the type of your Projection TV, how long you owned it, to have more idea.

I had this same problem and took it in to have it repaired. They told me the transformer board had gone out. cost me about 650.00 to fix it. I hope this isn't the problem.

Likely to be the STK convergence chips causing a protection circuit to cut in and switch the TV off when turned on. Do you hear clicking when you switch on?

Fuse is only a small wire inside a package,

Often convergence issues do not require the entire board to be replaced. You can resolve it by replacing the convergence ICs. The part in question is STK392-110. You will need two of them and they cost around 10$ each. But replacing them is a pretty complicated procedure and I would not suggest it to someone without prior experience. A service manual should get you started in the right direction if you are planning to do this yourself.

PS: Disconnect from the power supply before you start the repair. Also read the legend, the hv circuits are denoted by a special symbol, so you will know what you shouldn't touch.

You may also need to replace the nearby resistors that may have popped the IC in the first place. Read the service manual for further details.

Your TV most likely has one of two possible problems.

Problem #1: Convergence Chip Failure ( common problem )

Here are some of the most common symptoms and example photos of a convergence problem

• Screen looks 3D
• Colors don't line up
• One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
• Screen is bowed or warped.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the tv settings then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.



You should be able to move them up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

Solution #1

You need to replace the convergence chips and convergence resistors. Check the site www.TvRepairKits.com. They have put together a kits for most models. If you don't see a kit for your set send them a quick note and they will put one together for you. Their kits include a photo instruction guide, original OEM Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, pico fuses, etc.


Problem #2 CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

Solution #2


What you will need to do is replace the coolant and clean the crt. You can get a repair kit from www.TvRepairKits.com that includes replacement coolant, photos. instructions, etc.

convergrence ic going bad. usually reasonable to repair. 150-300 parts and labor.

your power supply is turning the tv off because of a higher than normal drain on on it . it could be anywhere in the set . but most of the time but most of the time its in the horz dirver or output , hv driver thansformer (flyback) or hv spliter system . it might even be in audio or in the power supply itself . you will need the service manual a good trvm and a scope . to go through the system by system .injecting signals when needed to make parts of the set come alive ....... messing with this set without proper tools and training may kill you . there are high voltages in this set that will kill even if the set is off and unpluged for a week .i can provide test point volts and waveforms and voltages that you should be looking for if you know of someone (or yourself) with the equipment and know how to make the tests .... please let me know ..............if this answer helped please rate 3 or 4 stars if you think i was a waste of time please dont rate at all a 1 or2 may knock me out of the paid answer department and right now the shop is slow so i need the $$ .......i have all the flow charts on your tv if i can help you look something up please ask thanks

most likley your problems are on the hyper board in the set
it will sorta dance at the top and be shaking back and forth at a fast rate
it would require the hyper board being repaired or exchanged
you would most likley wont to locate a professional in your area to assist with this repair
average repair is 280 to 320 in my area

Solved by resoldering some solder joints!!!!!!!

Toshiba Model 57H81 Rear Projection TV - Purchased 11-09-2001

Problem: Toshiba 57H81 Flashing Red Power Light, No Picture/Sound, Blown Fuses F850 + F852

Symptoms January, 2009:

• Upon turning on set I got flashing red power light and nothing else.
• Removing plug for one minute and plugging in results in:
• Audible click, steady red power light for 2 seconds then slow flashing red light
• Pushing power button results in steady red for about 2 seconds then slow flashing red light, no other set activity
• Removing power cord for several hours and plugging back in made no change
• Audible click, steady red for about 2 seconds then slow flashing red light
• Possible related note: Over past several months occasionally the entire screen would flicker momentarily and at other times be problem free for weeks.
• Fuses F850 and F852 found blown

Repairs Made:

• PD0074 DEF/CON Power Board
• There are two main power supply capacitors in this set. They are C-809 and C-810. One their negative lead on the printed circuit board re-soldered leads and nearby contacts. I’m told that because the factory left out a printed circuit board eyelet, the connection will come loose over time. When I called Toshiba customer service they said there was a known solder joint problem causing blinking red light.
• Replaced blown fuses F850 and F852.
• I actually installed a fuse panel on the inside of the cabinet and routed the fuse connections here instead of ordering the special fuses and replacing them on the circuit board.
• Had to use a 5 Amp SLO-BLOW for F850. Fast blow does not survive power up. Get the red blinking light.
• Used a fast blow 2 Amp for F852.
• PD0073 SIGNAL Board
• Re-soldered Q751 + Q752 STK392-110 Convergence Amps
• Re-soldered adjacent pads that looks suspicious

Total Cost to Repair about $10

• Twelve hours of my time over three days to research issue, disassemble set, make repairs, add fuse panel.
• Already owned Service Manual and Circuit diagrams from a different 2004 repair.
• Less than ten dollars at Radio Shack for fuses and fuse panel. Already had wires, etc.
• Some solder. Already owned de-soldering tools, etc.
• Visited both local authorized Toshiba factory service repair facilities. One said repair would have to include replacing Q751 + Q752 STK392-110 Convergence Amps with ST392-180, and realigning set for a total of $500+ and it would be more if they had to order a power board. NO THANK YOU! Other shop said $65 for site visit and $30 to make an estimate that could be applied to repair.

Projection sets have two very common problems.

The first common problem is convergence


These sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the picture to look normal. This is called convergence.

When its out of alignment the video will look 3-D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired. Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony, Samsung,JVC,Philip Magnavox,Panasonic,Akai,Pioneer, Hitachi,Mitsubishi,Zenith and others.

Here are some of the most common problems with these sets...

Can't be fixed has to be replaced. Check your local tv repairman & see if he has some spare screens. Can be cut to fit
