TOUCH FOCUS ERROR on Projection Toshiba TV

Hello Guru. I am getting the same error as ronny. My Toshiba has the TOUCH FOCUS ERROR message and the blue lines do not converge. I see a resolution was posted to replace the convergence IC's and that the Low OHM Resistors need to be checked for proper value.

Can you tell me how to do that? Thanks...

My 57H81 won't converge, plus I get the "touch focus error" message. I could get manual convergence of blue, but not red. Plus, during touch focus the red would not move horizontally

Toshiba TV repair

I have a Toshiba1.gif 57" DLP Projection TV Model # 57H82 that has a fuzzy picture. It recently developed a blurry picture. The picture corrects after I shut it off for a couple of minutes then turn it back on but then resumes to the fuzzy/blurry state after half an hour of running. Also the audio1.gif went out as well. It seems to me that something shorted in the main pcb board but I'm not sure. Anyone knows how to fix this.

Hyper board is located directly behind the input board, this is where all the tv conections are, then they are two tabs soldered from the bottom of the board then it simply unplugs, But replacing all those capacitors on that board can be a little tricky, replace all 10up @16volt caps and that usaly repairs the board

Projection sets have two very common problems.

The first common problem is convergence

These sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the picture to look normal. This is called convergence.

When its out of alignment the video will look 3-D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired. Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony, Samsung,JVC,Philip Magnavox,Panasonic,Akai,Pioneer, Hitachi,Mitsubishi,Zenith and others.
You can get more information and a DIY convergenece repair kit with instructions from the link below.

Here are some of the most common problems with these sets...

*Screen Looks 3-D
*Colors wont align
*Screen may look distorted or warped
*No Audio/Video - TV Shuts down - May also make a constant chirping sound

Problem #2 - Another common problem is dull or washed out video.

Your set may have one or more of the following symptoms....

*Dull looking picture
*White looking picture
*Halos around objects
*Red/Orange looking picture

Toshiba 57H81 Flashing Red Power Light, Blown Fused F850+F852

Toshiba Model 57H81 Rear Projection TV - Purchased 11-09-2001

Problem: Toshiba 57H81 Flashing Red Power Light, No Picture/Sound, Blown Fuses F850 + F852

Symptoms January, 2009:

  • Upon turning on set I got flashing red power light and nothing else.
  • Removing plug for one minute and plugging in results in:
    • Audible click, steady red power light for 2 seconds then slow flashing red light
    • Pushing power button results in steady red for about 2 seconds then slow flashing red light, no other set activity
  • Removing power cord for several hours and plugging back in made no change
    • Audible click, steady red for about 2 seconds then slow flashing red light
  • Possible related note: Over past several months occasionally the entire screen would flicker momentarily and at other times be problem free for weeks.
  • Fuses F850 and F852 found blown

Repairs Made:
  • PD0074 DEF/CON Power Board
    • There are two main power supply capacitors in this set. They are C-809 and C-810. One their negative lead on the printed circuit board re-soldered leads and nearby contacts. I’m told that because the factory left out a printed circuit board eyelet, the connection will come loose over time. When I called Toshiba customer service they said there was a known solder joint problem causing blinking red light.
    • Replaced blown fuses F850 and F852.
      • I actually installed a fuse panel on the inside of the cabinet and routed the fuse connections here instead of ordering the special fuses and replacing them on the circuit board.
      • Had to use a 5 Amp SLO-BLOW for F850. Fast blow does not survive power up. Get the red blinking light.
      • Used a fast blow 2 Amp for F852.
  • PD0073 SIGNAL Board
    • Re-soldered Q751 + Q752 STK392-110 Convergence Amps
    • Re-soldered adjacent pads that looks suspicious

Total Cost to Repair about $10
  • Twelve hours of my time over three days to research issue, disassemble set, make repairs, add fuse panel.
  • Already owned Service Manual and Circuit diagrams from a different 2004 repair.
  • Less than ten dollars at Radio Shack for fuses and fuse panel. Already had wires, etc.
  • Some solder. Already owned de-soldering tools, etc.
  • Visited both local authorized Toshiba factory service repair facilities. One said repair would have to include replacing Q751 + Q752 STK392-110 Convergence Amps with ST392-180, and realigning set for a total of $500+ and it would be more if they had to order a power board. NO THANK YOU! Other shop said $65 for site visit and $30 to make an estimate that could be applied to repair.

The convergence ICs and the six 1.8 ohm 1watt resistors need to be replaced. You can get the convergence repair kit for your model at www.tvrepairworld.com which has the Two Convergence ICs and the six resistors plus the CD with instructions on how to do the repair.

When we turn on the TV the picture is very fuzzy, colour still seems ok. It gradually "warms up" and the fuzziness reduces over a few minutes until the picture is pretty much back to normal. (TV Model is 57VW9UA Rear Pro 1080i HD TV)

Very common problem. not a common or easy fix though. This is known as a faulty "hypermodule" The hypemodule is a cuircit board that processes the signal. At the shop i have repaired a few a these on average 2 a month. The ideal situation is to replace this cuicit board. However this was such a common occurance these boards became rare. very hard to locate. So toshiba gave service centers another option a way to repair these. It however evolves the replacement of 11 very small micro capacitors. Only the most experence tech's experenced in surface mounted soldering should attempt this repair. You can easly mess this board up and once messed up...like i said you cant find them. My best advice is to find you a qualified shop who has done this repair before. It take an experence tech around 3 to 4 hours with magnifing glass and twezzers. My shop generally charges about 300 for this repair but shops vary based on experence
