I have this problem with my Hoover VHC681C. The plastic at the back of the condenser unit warps outwards and stops it fitting back in the hole. To work around the problem, when I've finished washing out the condenser I pour very hot water on the warped plastic to soften it, push it back into shape with a wooden spoon handle and hold it there while it cools. Then I hold it into shape with my fingers before slamming the condenser back into the hole. You have to be quick! A replacement condenser is £70 - £100 in the UK. Very disappointed in this machine. I will consider shaving off the warped plastic if it becomes too troublesome.

Wow, a late 1980 machine! If it is turning and not heating it probably needs a new heating element, IF you can find one. New ones are more energy efficient and look prettier. How good are you with a screwdriver and a multimeter Sarah? This says it has overheated and gone into protective state, but you say it is blowing cold?
