No power
Is it plugged in?? When was the last time you used it?? Did this happen after a storm?? What make and model of vcr?? How old is it?? We need more info if you want help on your troubles then it dosent work.
Faintly blinking power light
This may indicate power supply problems, or perhaps an overload condition, causing the power supply to go into overload protection.
If you have a voltmeter, schematic (helpful but not 100% necessary), you could check voltages. You should see at +5 volts, +12 volts, and one or two others.
A frequent power supply problem is one or more electrolytic capacitors go wacky, and cause the voltages to be way off, and a non-operational unit.
If this is one of the newer low cost rigs, then taking it to a service center isn't cost effective. Toss it and purchase a new one.
Tapes keep getting stuck
If your tapes are getting stuck, then most likly it is not a cleaning issue, but a mechanical problem. It would be something in the take up supply reel mechanism. Like a bad clutch, take-up gear or idler, and /or a bad or broken belt.
DVD does not play
sounds like a film may be over the len try to clean with a disc lens cleaner. other then that unless you can get a service manual and check the alighnment for laser sensitivity theres not really much more that you can do except tsking the unit to a repair person for diognostics
Distortion
Its because the head is worn out and you need a replacement of it. Clean the audio head and sound will be fine. Usually a good clean of both the heads will resolve the issue.
Not working
first you should know that the uk system is pal and the usa system is ntsc. ok connect your cable box using the rca cable to your converter then out of your converter to you tv. the converter box should have buttons for out and in now remember that pal signal is going in to your converter (it should automatically selected it) but you would probly have to select the signal that is going out of the convert and the signal going out is ntsc so make sure u select out signal to be NTSC. hope i could help
Power light is on, but nothing happens.
Two questions, Are you able to load a cassette?, and are you able to watch TV through your VCR?
These two questions are vital to further analysis. if the answer to both is no then you will have to take the VCR to a TV repair shop because it will require internal repairs that you may not have the equipment to perform.
Please get back to me with the answers to these two questions
Thank you,
NO POWER TO THE UNIT SV5000 VCR
If you have some tech savvy and a voltmeter, you could check the power supply voltages. This circuit is likely in the close vicinity of the fuse. On the output side you should see a +5 volt, +12 to 15 volt, and perhaps a -35 volt (approx). The +5 supplies the logic circuit, +12 the motors.
If these voltages are missing, or way out of tolerance, you will have a dead unit. A frequent cause of problems in the supply is bad electrolytic capacitors, especially in the older units (Panasonic manufactured rigs, late '80s/early '90s). Possible values on these capacitors: 2200MFD/10V 1000MFD/16V and several others. Replacements can be supplied by MCM electronics, Mouser electronics. I use the Panansonic FC series from Digi-Key Electronics.
If this is a high dollar > $250 VCR, it might be worth service center repairs. If not, then it is a disposable (unfortunate, but the way it is with most modern electronics).
No power
Well first thing you need to do if you know how to troubleshoot the power supply is to get a service manual or a schematic diagram. Then go from the front to the back as some techs start from the end of the supply to the front.. To each his or hers own I guess. Not much to tell as these vcrs have been very reliable and I havent gotten one in yet for service . sorry Good Luck

You should take off the top cover with the set unplugged and see if there is a main fuse that popped. If there is, put in another fuse,. If that blows, then your going to need to have the power supply in this unit repaired. Good Luck
Pal to NTSC
Hi,
Based on your post/description, you need to get a multi-system TV to go with your multi system VCR if you are going to playback VHS tapes from different regions.
You are quite correct "Plays NTSC tapes to NTSC,
Will not Play Pal to NTSC" to play PAL (even Secam) you would need a PAL/Secam TV. They have a different system for color and audio. In some cases, you can still play PAL but you get it in black & white and picture squeezed from top & bottom.
Hope this be of some help to you. Good luck and kind regards.
NTSC to PAL
You have to buy first a VHS player that can play NTSC, might not be available locally in Ireland so you have to probably buy online (US).
The DVD recorder is fairly comnon nowadays and all of them are capable of recording and playing NTSC and PAL. You can then connect the AV out of VHS player to the AV In of the recorder.
Or you can use a VHS-DVD combi. You can google in UK, here is an example:
Toshiba RD-XV45, according to the specs, it can play NTSC on the VHS and you can record to DVD on any format that yoou want

My father died of cancer 6 years ago and I am also transferring the Hi-8 videos to digital format using PC.
Connection
Ok If you are connecting the VCR through the cable or antenna fitting on the TV set, you will have to see what channel the TV set has to be on. Look at the back of the VCR at the RF output and there should be a small channel switch. You also must tune the VCR in to recive cable channels unless you are using a cable decoder box. Good Luck
Tracking problem
Suggestions:
1. Do a "reset" by unplugging VCR for 30 seconds or so. Doubtful to fix- but worth a try.
2. Pull the top cover, load a tape and play. Does the tape seem to wander up and down across the video or control heads? If so, this is a mechanical problem- perhaps a tape guide is broken.
3. Electronic problem: If this is the case, probably trash the unit unless unit is a high dollar ($250 or up). VCRs (like most other consumer electronics) are throw away items these days.
Flashing "2" on VCR front panel.
Hi Oshaman.
I have dealt with many VCR's and would like to ask you a few questions before diagnostics.
How exactly did you get the tape out of the machine ?
There are several tape threading gears involved, and if you accidentally made one of them skip a few teeth while forcing the tape deck up the "position" switch will send erroneus signals to the tape threading position switch/ controller.
Was the tape rolled around the capstan/pinch roller ?
Did you have to force the tape loading tray up to extract the tape ?

Happy Holidays.
