This is probably the text box function of the closed caption decoder. Find the closed caption button on your remote and turn off the closed captioning. The button may say "ccd" or "cc". You might have to turn it off in the menu.
I hope this helps.

These beasts are monsters to get into and service without the proper extenstion cables and a service manual. there are no user replaceable parts inside this set. if you know solid state serviceing, you can try and fix it. There is a bad capacitor or capacitors in the vertical sweep circuit and or the vertical output IC is bad also. If you can solder and unsolder go for it. But if you do not or know how the circuit Works Please find a trained tech to assist you with this repair. Good Luck.
PS please do not forget to rate this.
TV without cable
Depending on how far you are from the broadcaster you can try Rabbit ears or and outside antenna.. If the set is more than two years old you may need a digital converter after Feb 17th
Dvd player error
PS has no effect.. Most likely the laser is going bad in the DVD.. See if it will play a music CD* If it will play a music CD but not the DVD it is the Laser. Most of the Laser asm are made in china and don't last long.
Cable jack
The RF jack is solder directly into the tuner module and as long as it
did not break the circuit board inside that it connects to, it can be
repaired . Takes a lot of heat though to solder the jack to the
frame of the tuner. Sometimes I use 2 irons to get it hot before
the plastic guts of the jack melt too bad. Also is sometimes hard
to cram the jack back into its mounting hole, may need to file it
out some. The makers don't solder these on they are just pressed
in and crimped which is why they break off so easily. I recommend
using the push on type cables to avoid this problem. Don't forget
to solder the center conductor into the tuner board.
Hope Ya Fix It!

DVD PLAYS GREAT, TV AND VCR PLAY IN BLK-WHT W/NO SOUND
You have your DVD connected to your VCR, which is then connected to your TV, right?
The problem is Macrovision. It's designed to prevent you from connecting your DVD player to your VCR, so that you can't make duplicates of copyrighted movies. It's a real pain in the neck.
Try turning the DVD player off - or better yet, unplugging its power cord (as some DVD players are always in a standby mode, even when turned off). If that fixes the problem, then you need to reconnect your DVD player directly to the TV, not wired through the VCR.
If your DVD player isn't wired through the VCR, are you using some kind of wire splitter (one cable branches into two) to connect both the DVD player and VCR? That can also cause this kind of interference, if both have power at the same time. There are video switches you can get to work around that. Here's one such switch (first I found for a decent price with a google search):

Hope that helps.
Black and white screen only on DSTV?
RCA video cables handle analog signals. HDMI cables carry digital video signals. You need a converter. If you are using a component video converter, check if you swapped two of the three RCA video cables. (There are some A/V projectors that can do the translation of RCA and HDMI internally. Most TVs do not.)
I hope this helps.

(One of my family's TVs used a dongle to condense the analog video signal to a single port, swapping blue and green gave a black and white output, IIRC.)
I have an RCA re20qp80 remote that the mute button doesn't work
Most modern tv remotes are not normally designed to be repaired. You will possibly need to replace it. there are plenty of cheaper after market version that will do the job just as well. Your other option, and yes I know this is a silly answer, when you want to mute the TV is to simply press the volume down button to zero then turn it back up when you want sound.
