RCA F36450 36" TV Questions & Answers
Both of my tv's died
As an electrician, when someone loses more then 1 item of electronics in 1 day, its almost
always traceable to a nearby lightning strike, accompanied by a lack of surge protection for
the VCR/TV/Computer/Stereo/uninsured valuable electronic item/XBOX 360. Surge protection can
be provided by the consumer at the power strip (a good one with builtin protection and a
warranty costs $20, whereas a zero-protection 4-outlet or 6-outlet power strip will cost $4-$5).
Your electrician can provide whole-house protection, or per-circuit protection at
the breaker box, where a GFCI breaker (or better, an AFCI breaker) can be installed.
GFCI = ground fault circuit interruptor
AFCI = Arc fault circuit interruptor
Lightning protection is especially important in Florida, which is the "lightning capital of the world."
I've never found a good solution to lightning-fried electronics (random power supply components are destroyed), other than renters insurance or homeowners insurance.
If desperate, you could try replacing the entire power supply as a module, but even this provides
no guarantee of a fix - lightning damage can extend beyond the power supply.
When traveling, I will always unplug everything before I leave (except the security system),
and also turn off the breakers to unneeded house circuits (which kills the wall switches that
control interior lighting - forcing a burglar to use their flashlight instead of interior lighting)
which is the least convenient lightning protection, but highly effective, and cheap (free).
Good pictures but no sound just static
tvs get their picture and sound on different channels, and in europe, and in the usa the sound is on different channels, try in sound settings to set it to your area's sound defaults, so the tv will search for the sound at the right channels.
My rca tv F36450 turns on but no picture or sound what could be the problem
If the power light stays on it is one issue and if not another....I see so many people here with nosound /picture issues:ISSUES:1. If sound main fuse/s are good.2. If no power or standby light check fuse, standby power supply, and look forany signs of damage you can see (burnt parts etc)3. Almost all these SETS troubleshooting consists of checking voltages andtrying to narrow problem down.4. Be safe and if do not know what you are doing do not open set.ANSWERS TO ISSUES:1. RE: fuses---if a blown fuse is found get a good replacement (not the Genericones from like Radio Shack). Many fuses used are special even aside fromamperage. Don't put a higher rate amperage fuse in the set for any reason.2. RE:power supply: if total dead aside from main fuse set uses Standby powerand main power supply (some standby is on separate board but most are combined. Here aside from checking fuses you want to examine all the filter caps to seeif any are puffed up or buldged in some fashion; I attach a photo: top shouldbe (silver metal) perfectly flat and have no brown material coming out on topor bottom---l can give you a description if needed here why they fail---too lowvoltage rating causes them (standby area) to overheat and fail in a average 1-2years= The standby is running 7/24 when set is plugged in.3. Trouble shooting: It consists of the above and then at some point you haveto buy and try a board/s to see which if any fix the issue.4. Safety first---no set is worth getting injured or even killed over. Some additional suggestions:Consider contacting company who made set for information to see if your problemis a common one that their data base has ideas about. Also GOOGLE the model number with either "parts" "problems"or "manual" as a lot of information is available for free.have here only given you the basics but they
apply to most sets; depending on your skills if you have specificquestions let me know and I will assist as much as possible.
The TV will not turn on. The green light for the
The horizional out (HOT) has probably shorted. Sometimes the flyback transformer is also bad. Parts to fis it is about 30 to 50 bucks,Thats assuming you can replace it yourself. Hope this is helpful.
The volume constantly goes to it's lowest setting.
The front key switch (or remote key sw) vol- is stuck on or has intermittent contact. It is probably the front key switch but take the batteries out of the remote to confirm it's not the remote. if that confirms it then it's the front key switch which can only be accessed by removing the entire chassis and unplugging the front keybad to check.
Will not turn on
- Many TVs actually run their switchmode power supplies even when off to power the standby stuff like the remote control receiver, real time clock or timer, and channel memory. Depending on the design of the regulator, the power supply may be running at a low chopper frequency due to the light load. Some people, dogs, and rodents are then annoyed. It could also be an indication of a fault like a bad capacitor or loosened transformer core. I hope this help!!!
RCA 36' tube tv won't turn on
possible that a fuse blew while transferring tv, most like to happen despite care in handling if tv was on for a while, kind of like moving a light bulb that is hot and suddenly filament breaks when you move the bulb slightly. Other than that I'd say it's a good time to get a new tv just in time too for the digital transition.
Wont turn on
very expensive. depends on what the tv cost. how old is the tv? 36 inch tubes are high, especially now that glass tvs of that size are becoming rare. I didn't check the specs on that tv, but if it is not hi-def you might as well upgrade. I like rca too, its my favourite, but they don't last forever.
However if it is merely the transformer, that could be less than $100. You may be able to get a free checkup for the tv/estimate or maybe one for under $50. those tvs weigh a ton though...
Wont turn on
sounds like the tube is out. could be the transformer but probably not. I don't recommend you try fixing this yourself.
However some rcas are funny: unplug it again and leave it unplugged for about an hour then try again.

What you are hearing is the high voltage arcing a bit. This is often caused by dust buildup on the high voltage components, & is not harmful. A good cleaning with compressed air will cure it, but this is not a do it yourself job, because dangerous voltages are present inside any TV.
