According to the Vizio website, your VBR231 CAN play DVDs the same way a lot of Blu-Ray players can. The site blurb suggests the VBR231 is backwards compatible - which means your player should be able to play DVDs as well as Blu-Ray. Generally, most Blu-ray players can play DVDs if they are backwards compatible with them.

I do know Blu-Ray discs will NOT work in most standalone DVD decks.

As newer bluray movies come out they are constantly tweeking the format. More then likely you need to update your bluray players firmware or software. There should be an option under the menu for the bluray player to update the unit of course this will require that you have it hooked into the internet via ethernet cable or wifi network.

the DISK format is not recognized by your unit. Please try a different disk.

If it will not power on properly, try holding the power button in for 10 seconds. Most devices will reset with this technique. If that doesn't work unplug the device from power for several minutes and plug it back in.

The firmware you downloaded is flawed, there are numerous complaints about firmware updates causing all kinds of difficulties from no operation to partial access. I would contact the manufacture looking for answers.
