Is the problem that you left the batteries in the battery compartment? (a no-no, BTW.)
If so, you might get away by cleaning the board--if the circuit traces and components haven't been damaged.
Try mixing a tablespoon of backing soda with a cup of warm water. Using whatever applicator seems appropriate--a Q-tip, or small brush--clean the corrosion from the board with this solution. Wipe and dry thoroughly.
Inspect the board for broken circuit traces and damaged components.
If nothing is obvious, put fresh batteries in and try it--it will work, or it won't.
