Projection TV sets have two very common problems. One is convergence ( 3D/Warped video) the other is CRT fluid ( Dull Video). Here are more details and solutions for both. Repair kits with instructions are also avail from www.TvRepairKits.com

Common Problem #1) Convergence has gone out

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some pics of convergence problems.

Common Problem #2) CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

  • Turn on the TV set, bring up the convergence menu and make sure the three colors--red, green and blue--converge and overlap at the cross in the center of the screen. This is needed to help converge the TV later. Turn off and unplug the TV.

  • 2

Remove the front screen by popping off the bezel and pulling the three combined screens out. Place wide cellophane tape around the frame to prevent the three screens from separating. Lay the screen someplace where it won't be bent or scratched.

  • 3

Remove the circuit board from the bottom of the CRT neck. It may be held in place by one screw or glued in place with silicon. Pull it out without twisting it.

TELEVISION WENT CRACK AND WE STILL HAVE SOUND BUT

The picture going off is due to loss of high voltage. This is often triggered by a malfunctioning deflection circuit(High voltage power supply) , usually due to failed horizontal and/or vertical deflection ICs. This repair should be performed only by a qualified tv tech. These circuits hold extreme high voltages for several days after the set is turned off and unplugged .

Your problem is the fluid in the 3 picture tubes needs to be replaced. All the older projection sets used this type of cooling for the tubes. After time and usage the fluid becomes contaminated and starts to turn brown and light cannot get through the crud and therefore you wind up with a dull picture. I recommend having a service company do this procedure. It is very detrimental to the printed circuit boards and components if you would spill and on them. Most shops charge around $250.00 to replace the fluid.

Colour fading bright halo type around white

Projection TV sets are known to have two common problems. The first problem that is common to these sets is convergence failure. When this happens the TV will usually look 3D, Wavy/Distorted, etc. It may also shutdown and blink an error code.

The second common problem with Projection TV sets is dull video, halos around objects, white looking video, or red overpowers the screen. This is commonly caused by the fluid in the lens being clouded over.
