Downloading photos
Try NOT connecting your camera to your computer.
The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.
Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use any photo management program such as Picasa:

Can i change shutter speed on my camera?
Not much. The D-540 is designed as a point-and-shoot camera, which means you're supposed to just point and shoot, without bothering about such minor details as the shutter speed and the aperture. You have some control. For example, the Portrait mode will attempt to use a wide aperture to reduce the depth of field, which will result in a faster shutter speed, while the Landscape mode will attempt to use a smaller aperture to increase the depth of field, which will result in a slower shutter speed.More sophisticated (and heavier, and more expensive) cameras will give you more control, but this is about all you're going to get with most point-and-shoot cameras.

Camera won't switch on, put new batteries in
If you were able to take one shot before the camera packed up it can be that the battery does not have charge on it and so after the first shot it has drained the battery. So check out the charge on it or repeat charging to test once again.
Other wise it can be that the camera control unit is faulty. Try and reset by removing battery for a while and trying once again.
BATTERY SHOWS EMPTY WHEN TRY TO TAKE PICTURE
if its internal and have to charge it with a charger then you need to change the battery. i would recommend taking it to a camera shop and having it evaluated its well worth the evaluation trust me it might be something simple as just getting a new battery to a loose connection inside. Worse case you might have a bad indicator that needsto be fixed. Btw, I’m available to help over the phone in case u need at

The camera is quite old, I would guess that the image sensor has gone bad. The price of a repair is beyond the price of a new camera.

Camera won't focus on object sindce the picture
its likely that she may have hit the macro setting only allowing it to focus up close to objects to turn this off all you have to do is find a button that looks like a flower this could be on the arrow pad or in the menu system but it is called the Macro setting and with it turned off hopefully your pictures will be sharp again
