I think problem not from remocon.
Switches on front may cause it.
Open than replace switch may solve this problem.

If the DVD player is displaying disc error with all the discs, most probably it is a service issue..
Please use a cleaning disc and check if that helps.

the tv is shorting out. means its probably old and needs to be replaced. if its not very old its just got a faulty part. get ahold of manufacturer emerson technical service and they will tell you your options.

I need to know how to set it for record. I've tried setting for a time to start and stop, but for some reason it will not record. I have cable and the cable wire is attched to the tv/vcr.

Sounds like you have a coil or transformer that needs resoldered. Possibly in the hi voltage circuit but sounds more like a transformer in the switch mode power supply...

The door switch contacts located under gear on side of unit needs adjusting or cleaned. these contacts turn on cd motors. cd will not work until contacts are working proper.

if the universal remote you bought does not have the code for your tv then my friend you are in bad luck you cannot use another code that does not go along with your remote.try www.partstore.com and see if you can purchase a originald remote for you tv.good luck.

Direct (and Dish) may not have codes available for all brands and models; I know that from personal experience.
You need to got to Direct TV's website to obtain a current list of codes. Even if they have some for Emerson, they may be quite limited in their usefulness.
