I am not sure how
Usually you select the channel you want to record with your digital cable box and you set the VCR to channel 3 and record - check if that works. If you usually play tapes and watch tv through channel 3 than this should work. If not check if the digital box is hooked to the vcr first and then from the vcr to the tv. and if so what kind of cables a/v or rf (regular audio/video or standard cable) repost if you still have problem.
Can't find a dvd that will work in EWR20V4
Go to Office Depot buy TDK brand 16x DVD's thay are the only one's other than the Sony 8x that my machine can use. the Sony 8x which are getting harder and harder to find work great. Just go to O/D and buy a small pack of 25 or 50 of the TDK -R 16x DVD's and test them on your machine.
good luck
I can't record with my DVD player on 1x-16x DVDs
This unit is too old and too basic to handle 16x speed. However, there is a firmware update for this model DVD/VCR to record on 8x.
All you have to do is call the toll-free number in your manual and request it. They will send you an update disc.
Here is the basic procedure after you receive the update disc:
1. Turn on your TV and your combo unit. The tray should be closed. The unit must be in DVD mode.
2. Quickly press the sequence CM Skip, 6, 5, 4 (This will switch it into firmware update mode. The tray will eject automatically.)
3. Insert the disc and push the tray back in.
4. The update will begin. It will take approx. 2-3 minutes. It will tell you when it is complete and eject the tray.
5. When it is done, remove the disc, but DO NOT close the tray. It will go back in later. Turn the power off.
6. Wait a few minutes and when the tray goes back in wait about another 10 seconds and then you may turn the unit back on.
Firmware update procedure is now completed.
I bought DVD's and to my understanding that i need
While it is true that not all dvd players will play, record, or even acknowledge some media I don't think you need a firmware.4X -16X is the max . write speed of the DVD disc. It should be OK with slower speed machines. What did you use before? Good Luck.
Recording dvd
Hi there, original firmware supports only dvd up to 4x. If you will try speed more than 4, recorder refuse them.
Try to insert 4 x DVD, note even 4 speed dvd will not work all - depends on brand.
There is new firmware available, you have to call customer service before upgrade, they will tell you everything about...
With new firmware you will be able to record all speed and type dvd...
Dvd's will not play in color, all of a sudden.
There is a specific chip that processs color for the video output, if you are using the RCA connection or Svideo (Yellow or black cable) try the threaded tv cable. If that doesnt work it is probably not worth the $ to fix.

Cannot record on 16X DVD-R
You will need to call Funai 1 800 605 8457 give them your brand / model number and expose your problem - they should be able to send you an upgrade disc but it will cost you -
If you want my advice - you DO NOT need a 16x disc inside a DVD recorder - the optical drives used on DVD recorders and even worse a Funai drive are quite bad as it is in terms of writing strats for higher speeds - you are better off recording at 8x on a 16x disc.this will provide better burns ( lower PIE/PIF errors and jitter %).
No sound
Please make sure all cables are secure. Also, try playing a comercially made DVD or CD.
