Tracking

Hi,

3 possible reasons:
1. Your video head needs cleaning;
2. The pinch roller is no longer making full contact with the entire tape width; or
3. Your capstan motor is running out of standard speed.

Corrective procedures would call for:
A. Clean the video head with a tape head cleaner;
B. Clean, re-align or replace the pinch roller; or
C. Re-calibrate the capstan speed. In some models, there are 2 adjusting trimpots for SP, LP and SLP speeds. This procedure would call for a special tachometer and/or an alignment tape. In the absence, you perhaps can try winging it (adjust till you are satisfied and no picture roll). To determine which are the trimpots, you need a service manual or at least a schematic/parts placement diagram. Further you need to be familiar with electronic components and circuitry as well as use of a DVM. of course this would involve running/diagnosing/adjusting with the case/cover open and the unit plug in to the mains and running. This would also call for extreme care working with live units.

Should you not be comfortable doing a DIY, perhaps your best option would be to seek the services of a qualified VCR technician.

Hope this be of help/idea. Pls post back how things turned out or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

you have probably bent the tab that holds the tape end sensor or its light. The tapes have a clear section at the end of the tape and the light shines through to the sensor to tell the unit that the tape is finished. The light should not pass through the recordable part of the tapes. If anything is bent the light may shine on the sensor and tell the unit you're at the end of the tape and to shut off. Some units have a tape tension sensor also that tells the unit that the tape is broken and to shut off. Only way to know is to remove power and take it apart and look for anything that may be bent. Stay away from the rotating head assembly and the posts that the tap travels on. Do not apply power with the unit open. Do not load a tape and remove power as some units freeze in the loaded position and will not load new tapes unless manually placed back in the unloaded position.

It will not turn on

Most units have a fuse on the circuit board that must be soldered on. Some power supply components can be replaced through www.digikey.com or www.mouser.com . You can remove power and disassemble the unit. Look for items on the pc board nearest the power plug. Probable failures are usually integrated circuits and are usually black with silver leads. The part number is usually on the top or side and if you enter the part number into the search page of digikey or mouser and the ic is common, you can display a data sheet that tells you what the device is and how it operates.

Recording from camcorder problems

does the unit display what it's pointed at on its display screen or on the viewfinder? if the unit will play a disk but not record the problem may be in the lense or the video sensor. Check if the autofocus operates by running your hand across the front of the unit. if the autofocus knob or lever doesn't turn it may be the power. otherwise it may not operate with -R but only with +R disks?

DUBBING ONTO VHS FROM DVD

if you have two separate units, the best way is to connect s-video cable from the output of the dvd player to the input of the vcr. If not, second best is to connect the video/audio out of the dvd to the video/audio in of the vcr. Othwise the units may have a rf (75 ohm cable) output and the dvd usually sends channel 3 or channel 4 as an output when playing and the vcr must be tuned to this channel. Start the dvd, pause it, hit the vcr record button, then unpause the dvd.

VCR won't eject tape or play & powers off

It sounds as though it's jammed. If you're mechanically inclined you can unplug the unit, take the cover off, and manually eject it. Just look for the motor that drives the load basket and manually spin the shaft. The guide-posts should retract towards the tape and the basket will then lift and eject. Just be aware that whatever bit of tape that's out of the cassette won't spool back in. You will have to do that bu hand once it's out.
When you're done, plug it back in and let it cycle then put an old cheap tape in and see if it works. If not, take it in for repair.

Vcr powers offf.

This is a sign that one of your tape sensors is not functioning, See if you can get a schematic and use a multimeter to measure the voltages on the sensors to determine if they are working properly. contact me after you have done this and we can begin the troubleshooting process.

I cant record

I posted this in another person's question but it is probably relevant to you as well. This model (which I own myself) is outdated and needs a firmware upgrade. You might get lucky and get one from their tech support. However, I heard they stopped shipping them nearly a year ago. As it stands your recorder can only use DVD-R that records at 4x (or lower) and DVD-RW that records at 1x. Any other media is useless. Since 4x media is outdated, it may be hard to find at a major retailer. Let me know if you have any luck fixing this or finding working DVDs as I have had the same issue myself. I simply cannot find 4x DVDs in the store.

Unit will not start or load disc

Try opening up unit and using canned air and blow it out - sometimes simple dirt causes things like this While inside glance and see if you don't have some old tape or bits of labels that have come off and are anywhere inside that might be hanging the various working areas. Try using cd cleaning disk and vhs cleaning tape Without seeing this not sure what is causing it but may be something simple like the dust or pieces of label causing problems or the little rubber "tires" and other rubber components having gotten stretched out and slipping.

Movies on my recorded discs freeze after a few minutes of play

Sometimes this unit gets "confused" - not sure why -- but try first using a CD cleaning disk and let it start and stop a couple times (sometimes lens gets dirty and does this) - if that doesn't help then try unplugging unit and leave unplugged (from wall socket) for about 30min then plug in, set local time and then see if the disks play okay - sometimes this "resets system"

Programming errors

Several things to check 1) Your time - set it manually and remove the automatic time set 2) Try manually recording even a few min of anything (just put on channel to record, press DVD button and DVD Record button) - does it give you an error message on that disk? If so it might be because you are using 16x and machine sometimes gets messed up and won't record on those speed disks - same with +R sometimes does this - try recording on 8x -R ones. Hopefully this helps - if not try unplugging unit from wallsocket and leave off about 30min then try setting program again etc (plus current local time) and use a new disk and see if problem still occurs - sometimes just unplugging it "resets" everything and then starts working again.
