No digital audo from dvdld in
That's probably just for the video. Plug in the L & R RCA plugs for the sound or just use an HDMI cable between your receiver and DVD player. HDMI cables handle everything in one convenient cable.
How do I hook the
Usually if you have a Cable or Satellite box, you would hook up a Fiber Optic or Digital Coax cable from the Sat/Cable box to the Sony Receiver. Then for HD, an HDMI cable or componet cables from the Sat/Cable box to the TV
Cables
you coudl use a single rca to a left and right rca cable. However most woofers will have a lfe single rca input on the woofer that you connect to a single rca on the receiver.
Are you sure you are not confusing the +/- on the woofer that is used to connect your speakers? ie. my woofer has the +/- so i can connect to my front speakers and my receiver to filter the low frequency sounds via the woofer.

Unit going into protection mode
You should first have or check the impedance and resistance of the speakers. then if all the speakers and wiring checks good, the only way to tell if this unit is good or the output section has no problems, is to hook up load resistors to where the speakers go, insert 400 to 1000 hz @.775MV into an input, hook up an osilliscope to the load resistors and slowly turn up the volume and see if the waveform clips before it shuts down. I doubt if you will have the equipment to preform these test but a good repair shop will be able to help you out. If it does not clip or go out then its all speaker wiring and/or the speakers.
Center speaker not working
Yes Mark, You have a problem with a componet with that center channel. If your not a tech, dont have a schematic, or dont have any training in troubleshooting solid state electronics, unhook everythuing and take it into a repair senter for an estimate, as unless you know how to chech the parts you can cause more damage to the unit as it takes one slip and boom, all gone. Speaker volume low when set to TV
have you muliple scart leads connected? is everything wired through the tv? is everything wired together? you need 1 scart lead from the tv with enough scart sockets on it to take all your extras.connect your amp through a scart lead aswell.3 things will have to be turned on at all times e.g. tv,sat,amp.Don't connect any 2 extras together e.g. vcr to sat one will kill the sound from the other
Patio speakers
connect them to the front left and right outputs.connecting them to the sub-woofer will give poor sound because it only pick's up bass sounds during playback
Center and Surround Channels Inop
Even if it were a fuse, a blown fuse is merely a symptom not the solution.
From the symptoms you've described the AMPs are the most likely problem. They are mounted to a large aluminum heat sink usually about center of the main board. There are several and they are a task to remove and replace because the entire board has to be removed...
However, it's not too costly a repair and for a qualified shop something that can be done in a couple of hours - including testing.
If you like the receiver get it fixed. Compared to most digital receivers today it's probably cheaper to fix this one than buy another. And a good repair shop will add years more life to that unit...

Unable to hear dvd audio when dvd playing on Sony STR-DE575

The first thing to do is disconnect the red and white audio cables from the back of the receiver, and plug them directly into the tv. If you then have sound from the DVD, then you have eliminated the possability of no audio coming out of the DVD player.
If the DVD player checks out fine, then I would try plugging the jacks into another aux input on the receiver, and select that and see what happens. Also, if there is a "tape monitor" button on your Sony, make sure it is turned off.
I'll assume the receiver has sound from other functions, so it would be rare for one of the inputs to just stop working, (but certainly not impossible), I'm not familiar with that model, and normally I would say it could just be a dirty selector switch, but since you mentioned having a remote, then switching between inputs is done by the microprocessor, not a physical switch, so if you cannnot get sound through using another input, then it could be expensive to repair.
