No sound
Did you have storms go through your area and lightning strikes or power surges? We did a few weeks ago and I have very raspy sound but perfect picture...
No sound through speakers
Seems a problem with the board. It too complex to explain here, but I recommend gettin in touch with a serviceman.
Sony DAV-S300 NO SOUND
Is it under warranty?
Have you checked the manual for troubleshooting hints?
Can you bring in another device to try ( is there an AUX setting/plug in back)?
Need one set of speaker wires.
If the wires have just bare ends plugged into spring-loaded contacts then you can get some twin lead from radio shack or walmart. Just make sure you match the colors from the stereo to the speakers
otherwise you might not get real stereo or surround.
Standby mode
Have you got a manual?
If not , try the Sony consumer site for your model.

Cannot get "Test Mode Menu" with remote
Press and hold mute and return on the player and turn the volume control clockwise, the setup menu will appear after a few seconds.Go thru the menu and do the required disc calibration.Do not mess with settings you don't understand, else you'll create more problems than you solve.Have some good single, double layer DVD ,SVCD and CD for the calibration.
Cheers,
Patrick.

Hi,
Is this happening on all your speakers at once or just one particular speaker?
If its all of them it sounds like you have some sort of interference going on, probably a ground loop. Have you added any extra equipment to your home cinema set up like a new TV or a cable box?
If it is a ground loop issue you can solve it by giving all your equipment a common earth, i.e. plugging all connected equipment into the same electrical outlet with an extension block.
If this doesn't do it, post back and let me know. Also it might be worth checking if your warranty is still valid.
Audio on spekaers out, but not on AV output or headphones
my advice is replace the complete board then you will have no more problem.although 17.00 dollars compare to 264.00 is ridiculous it will cost far less when you multiply big numbers by $17.00.in that you might end up spending more than $264.00
Audio problems
Have you tried playing around with the Audio after pressing DVD Display? May be your answer.
No disc message on DVD Player
What you might want to try before giving up would be to get a lens cleaning disc. If that does not work then you may have to take off the top, locate where the small laser lens is, and with a small cotton swab, soak slightly in alcohol, and in a swirling motion, clean the laser lens, now with the dry end, do the same. Wait a few minutes for all the residue to dry. Plug in the unit, and see if you made any differance. If you did GREAT!!. If not well at least you tryed, and there is not alot more you can do as a consumer, without test equipment, or speacial jigs. It most likly will not be worth taking into a repair shop, as these days these players are almost a dime a dozen!. Good Luck
