Sony KP-57WS500 57" Rear Projection Television - Page 6 Questions & Answers
What does it mean when
Typically it is an indication that the blue CRT is failing. If screen turned red, then the red CRT would be failing, etc..
Sometimes you might see the screen flash blue and then go solid blue, then shutdown.
You need an experienced repair person to fix it. It can be expensive.
I have a 2002 Sony KP-57WS500 that occasionly
Seems like your RED CRT is shorting out or failing. Do you notice any other colors besides just red having problems? The blinking of the red light eight times is a High voltage error. It could be your D board but I'm thinking it is more likely the red crt is probably shorting out.
Blue haze and blue lines.
Projection TV sets have two very common problems. One is convergence ( 3D/Warped video) the other is CRT fluid ( Dull Video). Here are more details and solutions for both. Repair kits with instructions are also avail from www.TvRepairKits.com
Common Problem #1) Convergence has gone out
Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.
This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.
Common Symptoms include....
- Screen looks 3D
- Colors don't line up
- One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
- Screen is bowed or warped.
- TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some pics of convergence problems.

Common Problem #2) CRT Fluid is Cloudy
Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

It is playing double and the color is distorted
If your TV looks 3D, warped, or distorted it likely has a convergenge problem.
If however it just looks dull, washed out, redish, greenish, or blueish or if it looks like objects on the screen have halos the fluid in the lens has soured.

My screen is all red.
verify your tint settings in the users manual is not all the way to the left or toward the red setting.
Then try turning down the RED CRT screen voltage.
Steps:
1) Access is from the front. Remove the two screws behind two plastic caps on the front plastic bezel. They will be down just under the fabric on each side
2) gently pull the bottom out and down. loosen the wires from the tie wraps and slide it to the side
3) there is a another access panel, probably 4 screws you need to remove. Remove it, and you will see your three CRT's. Keep your hands away from them.
4) look for the little black box with six pots on it. locate the one that has an "R" next to it in the row for "Screen" which is screen voltage. The other row is for focus. Don't touch it.
5) With tv turned on, and on a black screen or blank input, very slowly turn the "R" knob down, until the red tint disappears.
assembly is reverse of above.
My screen has blue and red lines across it. Now
This is for if the lines are thin and in the form of an arc across the screen.
You need to turn down the screen voltage for the blue and red CRT. I believe the access is through the front on that model.
1) Remove the front grill
2) There should be access panel you need to remove once you remove the front grill. This is where the screen voltage adjustment is located
3) Look for a small black box with six knobs on it. One row is for "Focus" and one row is for "screen". It will be marked, but probably need a flashlight to see which row it is. There will be a "R", "G" and "B" next to each knob to represent Red, Green Blue respectively.
4) Careful with the access panel removed, you are only inches away from very dangerous voltages.
5) slowly turn the R or B knob counterclockwise until the lines on the screen disappear.
Keep your hands away from everything else and only use one hand near the tv. put the other hand behind your back.
6) Once corrected, replace the panel and put the grill cover back on.
My TV is showing convergence symptoms: the screen
One of two things:
Either:
a) The STK chips you put in are no good (not uncommon)
or
If you weren't careful you may have removed a surface mount resistor accidently while desoldering the orignal STKs. I had a customer do that to me once and figured it out by comparing the board to the schematic for that board location.
Convergence is off
Check the pico fuses in front and behind the Convergences ICs STK392-110
Pico Fuses Look like resistors ,but they will be Yellow or Green 5amp -7amp fuses.
If they are Ok then you need to replace bopth ICs .
Mats Electronics has ICs 1-800-628-1118

I get blue line ine the screen when it balck
This is for if the lines are thin and arc.
You need to turn down the screen voltage for the blue CRT.
follow the steps below:
1) Remove the front grill
2) There should be access panel you need to remove once you remove the front grill. This is where the screen voltage adjustment is located
3) Look for a small black box with six knobs on it. One row is for "Focus" and one row is for "screen". It will be marked, but probably need a flashlight to see which row it is. There will be a "R", "G" and "B" next to each knob to represent Red, Green Blue respectively.

I've replaced my STK's, 2
I believe there is a power board on the left side when looking from the back. It will be vertical, right next to the board you worked on. Take that board out. I believe there are about four pico fuses on that board. One or two of them will be open. Replace the fuses and you should be good to go.
Kp57ws500 i need to remove the front screen for
You need to take the front grill off. There are two screws on the front at the very bottom. They are covered by a little plastic insert for cosmetics. Remove the screws and gently pull the bottom grill down. You will see wire connectors you can disconnect to completely remove the grill. After that, there is about 5 screws under the screen bezel that are holding it in place.
How do i clean mirror
Fairly easy to do.
Follow these steps:
1) Unplug the TV
2) Remove the lower access panel (the pressboard with all the holes in it) by removing the screws holding it in place. (This is the panel where where your connections are made)
3) Remove all the screws on the big black shroud on the back that actually holds to mirror. There are probably about 15 screws.
4) gently lift the panel off and set in on the floor or table where you can clean the mirror. (remember the mirror is attached to the back side of it) I usually put in on the floor.
5) clean the mirror with glass cleaner or non-streaking solution.
Reverse the steps above to re-assemble.
Screen turns blue and suddenly tv shuts off....red
The Blue CRT is the most likliest cause and will need replacement. You can verify by removing the Blue CRT drive board if the set powers up and stays on you will know the Blue CRT is causing the shutdown.

Your problem seems to be in the High voltage circuit(deflection most likely) . However since you mention that you have ghosting and curved picture, it can also be the convergence circuit. Please get me an image of the screen when the problem appears so that I can see for myself what it looks like. You can upload the image to imageshack.us. After the upload completes click on the image, click view full size image , copy the link and paste it here
Where is the magic focus button?
Most Sony Rear Projection TV have a small door under the screen with some manual controls. Push on spring loaded door to open. Magic Focus is near the bottom and labeled.
If Magic Focus does not restore for correct operation, check the
Convergence Gallery to confirm if you have a convergence fault that needs repair. #8 is the Sony menu.
