The laser goes thru a different lens arraignment for DVDs.
Take it to a TV shop and have them "blow out" the laser assembly with some CO2 and clean the lens.

Did you turn the dimmer function on?

There are 2 set's of command switch's for the dvd player, a 3 position command switch on the back side of the dvd player and another 3 position command switch on the inside of the remote right next to the batteries, easiest option is to remove batteries from remote and test each one of the 3 position switch's labeled 1,2 & 3 and test remote control.

maybe the optical lens cleanable or the spindle motor wont rotate. but for the best is to consult your problem to sony service center nearest you

I would try going into the Menu options using the remote
and see if any of the audio settings dont match what you want and make sure the mute isnt on.

The motor isn't necessarily faulty. It could be a fault in the circuit board, or even the laser not reading the disk, so the player doesn't know it should be spinning the disk.

What lead are you using? have you tried changing the lead, usually on scart leads they can go faulty , try changing the lead.
