It sounds like you may have a convergence problem.

I will attach a few photos here of typical convergence problems; no two sets look exactly the same but you will know if your problem is like them.

If you find you have this problem I can tell you what is involved and needed for this repair.

People who bought rear-projection TVs between 2003 and 2007are bound to find their sets failing with blue, green or yellow blotches,hazing or bands disturbing the picture. It is often called the 'blue haze'problem. This LCD projection blue haze problem is coming from a faulty partknown as the optical block which is expensive to replace, and since Sony hasnot re-engineered the part, will only be replaced with another defective LCDprojection part that will last only between 1 - 4 years, depending on usage. Asit appears Sony produced these expensive TVs knowing about the defect, theyfinally have to reckon with the thousands of customers involved. If you own aSony rear-projection television, here are some steps you can take when the LCDprojection blue haze problem becomes apparent on your TV.
Instructions 1. * 1 Getinformed. Be aware that Sony just extended the warranty of all 2007 rear-viewprojections models (enacted at the end of October 2009) -- just like theprevious years -- so all models now have extensions. Also be aware that theyare not notifying the owners of these extensions even if owners have registeredtheir purchases.There is a lot of information now circulating about how torecognize blue haze problems and the background of how the problem came about. * 2 ContactSony directly about your LCD projection problem. Sony Customer Information Service Center (toll-freetelephone support) is 1.800.222.7669. Be aware that even ifyou have your optical block placed replaced and the service charge refunded, itwill only be a temporary fix until the replacement burns out again. * 4 Considerif other offers are right for you. Sony may offer you a discount on a new TV intheir "Special Consideration Program". (They stopped makingrear-projection televisions in 2007, but are now producing other flat paneledLCDs and other formats.) If your TV looks 3D, warped, or distorted it likely has a convergenge problem.
If however it just looks dull, washed out, redish, or if it looks like objects on the screen have halos the fluid in the lens has soured.

Yes,the tv is fixable.When was the tv projection lamp been inside this tv was replaced in this tv,when was it the last time the bulb was replaced?The last time the probjection lamp was replaced about 1 1/2 or 2 years ago?The tv on an used at leat 4 or 5 hours a day?The projection lamp life is over.Require a new projection lamp.

Your symptom sounds like a damaged convergence IC.

This is a common failure for this particular television. The power light might be blinking indicate a short in the power supply, this will happen soon if you do not repair the set before the STK's short out.

There are two and large IC’s that control the convergence in a big screen set. Some of the newer sets only have one. They are secured to a very large aluminum heat sink. They will have a part number stamped on them that will start with an STKXXX-XXX, like STK392-110, and they are located on the signal board (on the left as you look into the back of the set).

Along with the convergence IC’s there will also be some associated components that will need to be replaced as well. There are some resistors that are part of the convergence circuit that will be open and need to be replaced. Most likely these will appear charred in the center. If you have an Ohm Meter or a DVM, check all the resistors that are close to the IC’s and you should be looking for either ones that have opened or have changed values.
There are also two resistors on the front of the board located in the middle that are fusible link resistors, these should be checked for opens and replaced if they are found so.

If one of the convergence IC’s are found to be bad, I would replace them both, if one has gone bad the other may go soon. I usually order my parts from Andrews Electronics in California, they will have the OEM components that you will need.

I recommend the phone order so you can talk to the person about the different types of IC’s that are available.

I would also advise that the convergence IC’s be OEM or better, just because they are cheap does not mean that they are a good deal. I have seen the cheap IC’s fail after a short time, even though they look exactly like the OEM IC’s. I think that the bottom line is that you will get what you pay for when it comes to the parts.

Help

You can go back to factory settings by pressing and holding the ACTION and POWER buttons on the TV while it is on. A CHK screen will appear and when it does release the buttons and then power the set off then on again. This had reset all settings back to factory conditions. You will have to reprogram any channels into memory after this.

There was a post on fixya in about December of 2007 detailing the replacement of capacitor C581 on the "D" board but w/o pics. I can't seem to locate that link now.

But... I just did the C581 fix on my set tonight. Here are pics

What the person was thinking was that there is a thermo standoff resistor. This will not be the proper fix if there are other faults. The set is probably going off because of more complicated problems. Something is pulling too much current and should be found and properly fixed.

I would suggest to have the set properly serviced. You may be going to some extra trouble for nothing.

I don't have the service manuals for your set to know the exact component layouts and specs.

The following is a simplified example:
I can tell you that the tech should monitor the power supply while the set is running to see the voltage stability. When the set is in the off condition he should then work on verifying the cause of the shut-down. This involves following up along the voltage distributions through the set, and also checking the drive pulses from the scan circuits to see where the probable failure is occuring. Obviously, if there is a voltage shut-down, the scan drives should also be shut down. Then the fault may be a failure in the supply, or something on one of the boards is pulling it down.
