NO POWER.

To test a cap you need a capacitor tester. A multimeter can be used but it is really only good for determining opens and short in caps not actual values.

Projection TV sets are known to have two common problems. The first problem that is common to these sets is convergence failure. When this happens the TV will usually look 3D, Wavy/Distorted, etc. It may also shutdown and blink an error code.

The second common problem with Projection TV sets is dull video, halos around objects, white looking video, or red overpowers the screen. This is commonly caused by the fluid in the lens being clouded overs.

Pico fuses

IDing components of electronics is fundemental, if you can not ID a resistor or capacitor you do not belong inside a TV or any electronic device. but here is what they look like.de89c0f.jpg8253598.gif177afe3.gif

Resistors and capacitors

Resistors are usually cylindrical, depressed in the middle and have three coloured rings (sometimes 4) around it to show the resistance value (but they do come in other shapes as well). The leads are generally on the base, one on each end. They are usually placed length-wise on the board. Here is a sample pic:

Capacitors, on the other had, are usually cylindrical all the way through and are encircled by a plastic sheath. Sometimes they look like small rectangualr compressed boxes. The leads are usually both at the base end on one end only. The top or cap is usually visible and point upwards from the board. They have their values usually printed on the plastic sheathing.
Here's a sample pic or two:

Hope that helps, and dont forget a Fixya rating!

Samsung sp42w5hfx stanby light flashes and clicks wont start up

first check for solder bridges on your work even the best solderers can bridge solder (even myself). if this is a seperate board. then unplug the power lead to the convergance board. if it is not a seperate board and is part of the main board then unplug just the convergance yolks turn the set on and set the convegance back to factory reset in the menu. unplug the set and return the wires back. then turn on the set you should be able to do a flash focus to return the convergance. if the set doesn't turn on after retuning the wires then check for open pico fuses or bad resistors in the convergance circuit.

Big screen tv broken

If you're NOT still under warrantee you should at least open the TV and look for a blown fuse near where the power cable enters the set. A lot of times you can buy replacement fuses at a local electronic or hardware store and they're easy to replace. Check the fuse. If it is blown, it will be obvious and make sure that the set is unplugged before replacing it. If it blows again, or if it is not blown, your problem is probably in the 'X' volt regulator and you will need professional help with the repairs. You can also check the board where the components are mounted and resoled any that look bad. Brief power outages may cause the TV to turn off on its own. If you are using a surge protector, try connecting the set directly to the wall outlet. In your case it could caused by a blown fuse, a leaky diodes or a bad solder joint at the horizontal drive transformer. All can be replaced at a local electronic or hardware store and they're easy to replace If this does not correct the problem, you may need to have your TV serviced. good luck!
