go back into the menu where you format discs at and there shouls be a option to finalize disc.

Usually, nothing can be deleted after finalizing. But deleting a brief title donesn't change the remaining time. Deleting a long one does eats up some of the DVD time...

You should check that the connections and audio settings of your unit are as you require for playback.

You should avoid extremes of temperature for ALL electronic equipment.

May be dust/dirt on the lens, so try blowing gently or using a DVD cleaner disk.

U88 means the unit has detected an error while recording or playing and has entered its recovery process to restore the unit to normal operation. You could try using a DVD-RAM disk or a different make of DVD-R but, as you say the unit is new, you should probably return it to the retailer for exchamge, repair or refund according to unit age and retailer's return policy.

What SCART connections do you have on each of the three units (TV, Virgin+ and DMR-ES10)?

You need to buy a chipped remote. You can find these on eBay for around £12 sterling. Look for the multishot devices (eight uses) rather than single shot, as they can work out a lot cheaper if you (and friends/family) have more than one unit to unlock. Some dealers will even offer a £5 rebate on return of the remote if you do not wish to keep it as a spare.

Check connections, cables, settings and read both the instruction manual's troubleshooting section.

Hmmm, bad connections, anti-copy protection on certain programs or faulty machine is my guess.

I guess you must've hit a sequence on your remote to lock it up, try unplugging for a few hrs and turning it back on to see if it goes back to normal.
