Being a VCR/DVD recorder combo unit, the tracking issue is usually mechanical, and can be caused by any one of a number of things, including guides.

Unless you are tech. savvy with years of experience, this repair really should be undertaken by a qualified technician in a fully equipped service workshop, as some of the parts, if they need to be replaced, can only be obtained via them. The other worry is the expense.

In your case though, it sounds very much like a faulty guide (some service agents refer to these as 'base incline units') assuming the playback picture has noise bars but the speed is otherwise steady - replacement/alignment should be done by a technician - submit your unit to a workshop, tell them the problem, get a quote, and second opinion on the likely parts/labour costs involved, then make a decision afterwards on what action to take. Up to you.

(these decks use a belt between the capstan and the clutch flywheel under the mechanism - the workshop may replace the belt as well, since these stretch over time; which can also cause tracking issues)

In any case, the workshop second opinion and quote will tell you more. You should not need a new unit.

Your unit is most likely fried from the surge. Fixable but cheaper to replace.

In Australia you can contact the nearest Panasonic service agent and, according to service consultant on the telephone, they will fix it to multi region in about 15 minutes at no cost. Only catch is you have to take it to them and that might be an across city trip.

what kind of discs dvd-r, +r, +rw, Ram,??? Dvd-r are more univeral for playback. rw is usually cpu format.

The reason probably is because all broadcast TV is digital, and the em-55 tuner is set for analog channels. It cannot receive today's broadcasts "thru the air" because channel 2 for example is not broadcast, rather channel 2.1, 2.2, etc. You can use the signal with a new TV, but when you turn ON the em-55, it inserts channel 3. Most all TV here has what I call sidebands, and some have as many as 11, so the tv can be set for 3.1, or 3.2 or 3.3. Even if you have a digital-to-analog device, the em-55 will not receive any .1, .2, .3, .4 and so on. I verified this recently reconnecting my old antenna to the converter then to several VCR's and DVD players. Turn off the em-55, and the dot channels pass through the RF connectors.. Some DISH, cable direct TV receivers convert the signal to ch 3.

THe problem was not with the remote but with the hookup of the player.

Are you trying to record from a broadcast signal, or via one of the SCART inputs? The E55 has an analogue tuner. If the TV companies in your part of the world have switched to digital broadcasting, the E55 can ONLY be used to record via the SCART and other video inputs, the tuner won't receive anything

With the unit turned off, press and hold the [STOP] and [CHANNEL UP] buttons on the main unit at the same time for about 5 seconds. (Ejection may take extra time depending on discs.) DO THIS ON THE MAIN UNIT (NOT on the remote) It worked well for me. Roget

If you replaced the laser yourself, you should question whether or not you've done the job properly. If you got someone else to do it, you should return the unit to them in order for them to put it right.

Are you trying to record off-air broadcasts?

The power ICs are a known weak spot on these machines - replacements are often found on eBay, tagged with the model number. You could try this for your locale
