Self check, repeated ON/OFF status

IC1 in the power supply is the most likely possible cause, affecting the main voltage rail (should be about +12V). Using an oscilloscope, check this device, see if the voltage varies or is low, and order a replacement component (prefix STR or similar). It might also be a good idea to upgrade the firmware (but only do this by obtaining the correct version from Panasonic for your model). Check for bad solder joints in the PSU too, just to be safe.

Our panasonic dvd recorder keeps

From experience - it is probably the main IC (IC1) in the power supply - it may have become defective somehow, or been partially destroyed by an increase in voltage going to it. The power supply is the biggest problem area in this series of DVD recorder (the Panasonic DMR-E55 is another model which has a similar problem). My suggestion would be to check every component within this ciruit for leakage, short circuit/open circuit, as well as the IC itself before replacing any parts. The number on the IC should be type STRxxxxx (whatever the number is) and this device should have 5 pins or more. I also recommend replacing all of the electrolytic capacitors in the power supply to ensure long-term reliability.

My Panasonic DMR-E85H DVR won't power up. Had

In an unit of this age the first thing that fails is the power source (more specifically the filtering capacitors - they start to dry out), especially in a unit like this, with very little space inside for air flow and big consumers that generate a lot of heat.
If when the source has failed nothing else was damaged the fix will be quite simple and easy to do and al the replacement part will cost less than $40. To that you must add the labor - that depends on who is going to do the job.

Power supplierd but does not start recorder no

Hello:

If the unit is competely dead, then you may of blown a fuse or the power supply has failed in the unit. If you take off the top of the unit while unpluged check the fuses near where the power cord attaches to the inside of the unit this is the power supply area, If you have indicators lit or the display is coming on then the unit may have a bad power supply or the System control board has failed. It which case its cheaper to just purchase a new unit.

I get no sound. No

As I understand you have the TV and the DVR that has the confusing fault.
So first of all cross check the TV to see if there is sound to the TV , the Audio output from the TV must be checked with an amplifier. If there is no sound the preamp output is fault which can an OP AMP failure and cannot be too serious.
Similarly check the input of the TV- AV- to produce the sound from a Tuner/DVD/VCR player. If the sound is absent it can be failure of the same section(input OPAMP) as the output is working in the TV.
Now if there is output from the TV but the DVR does not record the fault is the processing in the DVR. Now cross check the DVR connected to the working TV and if there is no sound then have the files transferred to a PC to check the properties which will give you an indication if there is any fault in the file configuration.

I cannot set the time.

If you reference page 43 of the manual it tells you how to set the clock. I would first proceed to follow the steps and do the auto channel setup and then the auto clock setup.

Panasonic Service Center
1590 Touhly Ave
Elk Grove Village, IL 60007

If you decide to send it in for service. They pay shipping as well.

press and HOLD in the power button on the E85 (not the remote). Keep holding in until the machine completely turns off and you don't see the red clock symbol in the window. Once the machine is off, unplug the power cord and wait 10 minutes. Plug back in and report back. What the procedure does is reset and delete all special announcements and ads pulled into the TVGuide. It's been known to fix many problems. The channel up/channel down reset should also work, but you'll lose all TVGuide data. Have you ever reset the E85 before?

Don't worry about losing programs on the HD for now. The manual does warn that the HD was never intended to be a long term storage solution. The E85 will actually re-initialize and format the HD, all content is lost, if there's too much fragmentation. If you do manage to get the machine back up and running, start copying things off to DVD's.

The following will set your recorder to the Factory defaults. (Will not format HD on DMRE80).

With power off (stand-by mode), Press and hold [skip reverse] [Time Slip] [Eject] buttons on the units front for about 10 sec. Unit will go into Self Check Mode and then Display 'L1 TEST'. Now power off. Clock should be flashing 12:00. Turn power on and intial setup menu will be displayed on TV. Use also for DMRE50, DMRE55 AND DMRE85 models also.

For some models, press both [dub] buttons and [eject].

Hello, i have a panasonic

When you are powering the set the power supply and the control boarrd is working alright but when the set is triggered to switch on the microprocessor is not powering up but is shutting down the system
So possible errors can be
1. failure of the control drive of the loading
2. failure off the HDD drive which is not starting up.
3.failure of the main board.
I sugggest that youkeep the set powered on for abotu 12 hours- overnight - to see if the warm up can rectify the fault that can be a passive section powering up slowly.

My DMR-E85H was in storage

Hi.

If there is no power at all, then problem is either power cord or PSU inside the recorder. Check if the power plug is fused (eg. in UK), in that case replace fuse. If that does not work, then the unit must be disassembled, and the PSU must be tested by a technician.

We have a Panasonic DMR

Hello,

from my experience, I think your player is having a power problem. It must have received excess voltage/irregular power supply which has damaged an IC or capacitor on the power board of the player.

Sometimes this excess power supply might damage the player's main board. This is why it is advice able that you use step down for your player, because DVD player don't need excess power as something might be damaged.

To solve this problem, you will be needing a meter. Open the player, use the meter to read the components on the power board as it will help you discover the component that got damaged and you can then replace the bad component.

But if you do not have the knowledge of fixing this problem, you might be needing the help of a repairman.

Good luck.
