Hi my dmr-ex78 is saying there is a disc in the
It sounds very much like a dirty lens. Did you try a lens cleaner? If not please purchase a lens cleaner with liquid. You can get it for as low as 10$. It is very easy to use. Pop the lens cleaner DVD into the player and play it it runs for a while and the brushes will pop out. Then put 2 drops of liquid on each brush and play it again and the issue will be resolved.
Let me know if it worked.

I record medical video files
First of all regarding the video not able to play on certain players: You can easily resolve this by downloading and installing the k-lite mega codec pack, that you can download from
http://www.free-codecs.com/K_Lite_Mega_Codec_Pack_download.htmThis will let you play any video file on any player. Just dont change any settings while installing.
Even though AOA ripper is not able to read the DVD, there are still ways to retrieve your video. There are VOB files on a DVD which you can try converting to formats such as mpeg and try burning them again. There is a free software called Virtual Dub that can do the job very well.
Its an open source software that you can download from
http://www.virtualdub.org/download.htmlHope I have answered your question.

It appears the hard drive is frozen. What can be
Nothing can be done to fix the drive, but it can usually be replaced.
Once a drive is broken it's usually unrepairable. Even if it's just the drive motor it's cheaper to replace the entire drive and is an opportunity to upgrade to a larger capacity.
Note that I've not done this on your individual model before and on many makes and models standard pc drives are used but sometimes use specialist software to format the drive in a different way to those on pc's. Just search for "DMR-E85H drive upgrade" and you'll find the info and tools required to do the job.

After inserting dvd there is a loud whirling sound
Usually when there is "no disc" on the dvd , there could have been moisture inside your dvd.
Your best bet is put the dvd in a warm room plug it in, for 2 hours then try again.
Another thing have you checked that the dvd and disc are compatible.
Hope thats ok for you.

Dmr e85 will not start up
Hi Audi,
Try unplugging the hdd & then turn on the dvd recorder & wait for about 5 minutes.
Then unplug the dvd recorder & plug in the hdd & turn back on the dvd recorder to see if that fixes the problem.

No sound
I have the same problem. During a storm, I lost power. When power came back on, the Recorder lost sound. I've tried new cables and checked connections. No luck. Please share if you find the solution. Thanks.

I have this unit and have been using it for about
Power supply section will be the first place to look. Four years old will not be worth fixing, the LASER may be getting weak by now after you get the power supply fixed, I would put money in a new recorder.

Self checking
This is a known fault with the Panasonic DMRs. Basically, the main chip in the power supply circuitry starts to fail intermittemntly due to poor design of the heatsink.
If you search FixYa site it will come up many times.
Unless you or a friend can (safely !) identify, handle, desolder and solder electronic components, this is not a DIY repair.
If you can, like I said there are already several really good FixYa fixes for this.

Unit will not start
Sounds like my woman. The thing is looking for a signal. Hook the TV or stereo receiver up to it or put a DVD in the tray. Some DVD players take a bit to power on so you might just be an impatient lot. Take the thing back to the shop and exchange for a different brand like Sony or Samsung which power up quicker and are more user friendly.

I assume you put the caps in the right way? Check to see if you accidentally bridged a solder joint. Or I've done this, pull other components out to check them and got them turned around backwards, especially caps.
