Could be that your original problem was panasonic's common bad capacitors issue. Open case again and look for yellow substance on top of swollen capacitors. Look for instructions on this site for soldering in higher rated replacements. I made this repair myself today!

Panasonic dvd video recorder dmr-e85h is dead
I had same problem. I replaced two bad capacitors on the power supply
card. See http://vassfamily.net/projects/DMRE85H/dmre85h.html The
capacitors I replaced were C1260 and C1261 slightly different from the
one on "vassfamily.net". Everything works now for me...
Good luck.

DMR-E85h - Please wait error - capacitor replacment
Capacitor blow up if its polarity in circuit is incorrect or its working voltage is lower then volts in circuit.
Polarity= capacitor has 2 pins and usually one is marked with Negative mark ( - )
Working volts= each capacitor has 2 details, one is its capacity and other is operating volts range. for example 100MF/UF 25Volt...100MF is its capacity and 25V is its working volts limit and must not be used in circuit having above volts.
In your case 2 possibilities, either capacitor was put in opposite polarity in circuit or its working volts are less then old capacitor.
Please wait error comes in DVD players when sled motor of optical lens does not work, please slide optical lens 2-3 times by holding its sides with fingers. Do not forget to unplug unit before doing so.
Thanks.

Can't change the clock time
Best Solution posted Nov 6, 2008, by Guest -- worked for me. Wondering what the DST is? -- Daylight Savings Time. There will be a button at the bottom right in the date OFF. Apparently the TV Guide programing does not work that well, especially with the new Digital boxes now need to receive over the air TV and the TV Guide programing never worked with Satellite TV. Wil this feature ever be up dated? I doubt it. It would be nice to have the digital box and your dvr cycled together.

Message on machine constantly says "please wait". It will not turn off unless unplugged.
This machine has problems with the power supply board that can cause a continuous please wait on system check or please wait triggered by trying to dub to DVD-R. The first problem is likely to occur with the older power supply boards and the DVD dub problem on the later boards. The bad capacitor problem was on the earlier power supply boards. The following link is to the solution for this http://www.fixya.com/support/t216825-dvd_recorder_frozen_please_wait_display The later power boards have a voltage regulator problem and the fix for this is at http://www.rbjtech.net/electrical/e85/e85.htm#0 You will notice from the photos that the early and later boards look different so it's easy to see which one you have. I replaced the voltage regulator in my machine and it now works like new.

PLEASE WAIT
I contacted Panasonic about the "PLEASE WAIT" on display and after a few attempts to fix I was told that it would cost $130 minimum to repair. Then I found I had the same problem that
hpwhite & RandyChev described "PLEASE WAIT" on display. I followed their very precise and informative directions and found that I also had two bad (bulging) caps, C1270 & C1271 Thanks to the pictures he posted, I was able to find replacement 1000uf 35v Radio Shack #272-1032 capacitors and replaced them with no problems. I then was able to power it back up and all of my information was still on my hard drive, even the correct time in the display. If you can find RandyChev's description with the pictures, it is very easy to understand
