1. It may not be compatible with your TV.
If its an older unit, it may not have a working code with newer controlers.
2. You may be missing a single step while going through the code search feature.
3. The batteries may not be strong enough to power the new remote.

The universal remote will have a manual that explains how to determine the correct code for the tv based on the name of the tv manufacture. No other information is required.

Can't help you on what is wrong with the player but to get the dvd out, look for a small hole near the dvd drawer opening. Use a straightened paper clip or a straight pin and insert into opening. This should release the drawer to eject the dvd.
