Check the battery first. For some batteies, even though they will show proper voltage when we measure it with a multimeter, but the current carrying capacity will be very low. For such batteries, charging time will be very low and aso the sorking time. If battery is good, it will take some time to charge. We can determine the ampere capacity of the battery with relating this time.
The second possibility is a blown out protection fuse inside the GPS. Just check the battery first. If it is found OK, the fuse must be replaced. But before replacing the fuse, you have to check the reason for the fule blow. Otherwise, the fuse we insert new also will blow up, if there is any short circuit inside the circuit board of the GPS.
So it is adviced to get the fuse repalced by anu well experienced service technican, after proper check; if the fuse is blown. It will be best ot get it repaired by the authorised TomTom service center, because, the some components; if has damaged; cannot get from open electronic spare part market, as most of the GPS components are rare to get from open market. OK.

Or if all you get is a green light when its plugged into an external charger, then you could have blown one of two Microchips on the charging circuit and to get it working again they will have to be replaced. If it has just become corrupt you can try resetting the tomtom
To reset your TomTom device, do the following:
  1. Check that the battery is charged properly.
    Charge your device for at least 2 hours before trying to turn it on again. Make sure the charging light on your device is on.

  2. Remove the SD card
    If your device uses an SD card, remove it.

  3. Reset your device.
    Use a straightened paper clip, or something similar, to push the reset button for at least 15 to 20 seconds. See the pictures below for where to find the reset button.

  4. Turn your device on.
    Press the On/off button for at least 5 seconds.

  5. Insert the SD card
    If your device uses an SD card, insert the SD card.

It needs to be rebooted. Turn off, by holding off button down. Then once it is completely off, then turn it on, BUT when you go to turn it on, keep on button depressed, all the way until it turns on and then some for about 15 seconds, now you just rebooted system. Let me know, mike

A lot of tomtom's had this problem a while back where they suddenly put safety lock on for no reason, it was a bug in the firmware,have you tried updating the tomtom to the latest version available through tomtom home?

When you type in postcodes into the TomTom you have to omit the space - for example, the postcode AB1 2CD would be typed in as AB12BC

if the battery went flat and the device switched itself off, plug into power supply and press and HOLD the power button for a few seconds until the unit powers up again. Can take 3 - 4 seconds

Most GPS problems - Hangs, frozen screens, problems acquiring satellites, ETC, can be attributed to the device not having the latest firmware installed.
This firmware enables it to communicate with the satellites - but if they aren't speaking the same language they get confused easily. For Garmin GPS Automotive units, Garmin has you do the following before sending it in for repairs:
2 - HARD RESET (CLICK HERE to see instructions for either reset)
3 - UPDATE the device using their WebUpdater software (CLICK HERE for that) Garmin is the only company that offers repairs AFTER the warranty has expired. They offer a FLAT RATE REPAIR service for units no longer in warranty. For Other GPS units please consult your owner's manual or their support site - as each model - and even manufacture dates - can lead to different reset procedures. TomTom

MAGELLAN NEXTAR does NOT offer any types of Firmware or map upgrades or repair services. Instead - they have an exchange program to update to a new UNIT for around the same price as a repair would be. CLICK HERE for more on that. WARRANTY on most GPS devices is 1 year from the date of purchase.

Broken screens are considered ABUSE - and not covered under warranty.

Finally - If your unit is on the charger for HOURS, You've tried both the car AND USB type charger, and you turn it on... it stays on for a minute (or so) then powers down or never comes on at all - the battery has lost it's ability to hold a charge and must be replaced. Looking around YouTube - you can get a tutorial on how to CAREFULLY crack open just about any GPS. The tool(s) necessary typically are included with the battery purchase. Typically batteries run about $25 +/-. NiCd batteries are meant to be energized once a month so they keep active, and don't build up deposits that lead to their premature failure.

Tap on main screen, now press blue arrow at bottom right of screen. On the next screen you will see at top right CLEAR ROUTE. press this and the next screen will give you the option to clear YES or NO. This will clear the last route used. or tap screen tap spanner to Change Preferences, tap black arrow. Here you can manage you favourites or change you home location. Hope this is of help to you.
