I had the same problem. The problem is with the ad card not the unit. If you made a copy of the sd card before you altered it delete the card and reload it with the back up info.

boot up failure / switching off part way through the boot up is usually caused by corrupted data or files on your SD card.
When booting up with faulty data the TomTom has 3 options
  1. Continue to boot up and run the errored software
  2. Boot up until a file cannot be correctly loaded then shut down
  3. Try to boot up but if not possible show a RED X on the screen
The other cause for shutting down is a partly charged battery but since you are running off a charger lead this cannot be the case .
So , with the above in mind , its most likely that you have corrupted SD card . The only ways to recover from this is to format and re-install from a backup of the card. OR , it might be possible to overwrite some files or folders from a similar "friends" card in the hope that you overwrite the correct / corrupted file. This is a longshot in the dark but is a possible cure.

Good luck

You simply use tomtom home ( software ) and do a map update . if any update is available then it will auto download but you will need to purchase ( Buy / pay for ) an activation code from tomtom to make it work.

  1. switch tomtom on .
  2. tap screen where the satelitte bars are ( bottom right )
  3. You should have a status bar on right of screen with a battery symbol , under that is a satelitte signal bargraph , under that is a " version number ".
  4. tap screen where version number is
  5. all details including device number should now show on screen.

You probably have a directory on your Storage Card called \Storage Card\My Documents\Map_Name

copy the Map_Name folder to the root of your Storage Card

so you have \Storage Card\Map_Name

restart TomTom and it should pick up the map back. if this didnt work then probably the card directory where the map is stored may corrupt or unreadable try reinstalling the map
at least this has worked in many tomtom one’s
And one xl’s that i have tried,
First of all connect your tomtom to your computer.
making sure your online,Go to log on.
if you’ve not created an account create one now.
If you’ve had to create an account restart tomtom home.

You should have the tomtom home screen in front of you,
Now even if tomtom home is showing you logged in, ignore
this click your email adderss in the top right hand side of the screen
and log in again and click continue.
Then click Device/disconnect device.
Now your tomtom will update itself and your maps will be restored
please let me Know if this has worked for you.hope this helps pls apprecite by rating as fixyaa thanks and Godbless

woops , where are you ? ( in the world ) and contact info ?

Tomtom GO 300... | Answered on Nov 15, 2008

Unfortunalty , you have missing , corrupted or damaged files on your SD card. if you backed up your SD card earlier to a PC , then format and reinstall them to your TomTom SD card.

good luck

It is something more drastic . Sorry . Its very likely it will have blown 2 IC's inside your tomtom. see my other reply here >>>>>>>.... click me

Tomtom GO 300... | Answered on Nov 15, 2008

Try resetting it by inserting a small pin or paper clip through the reset hole ( look underneath the tomtom ). if it wont reset then it's likely 2 IC's have blown inside ... U24 and U25.

Tomtom GO 300... | Answered on Nov 15, 2008

try the "secret" reset button

I think most or all tomtoms have this button that needs a pin sticking in it? Worth a go anyway!
