There's a small pin hole somewhere on the unit were an ink pen tip can fit in. Inert the tip of the pen in the hole and hold it for about 3 seconds and release it. This will reset the unit. I have a Becker GPS.

I HAD THE SAME PROBLEM AFTER I DOWNLOADED THE LATEST UPDATE. I RELOADED IT AND NOW IT SEEMS TO WORK OK. GO TO THE LOWRANCE WEB SITE AND THEN TO DOWNLOADS. LOOK FOR THE UPDATE FOR YOUR GPS AND FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS.

You can get the updates on the link below. It says that there is no iway 500 but this is for the iway 500c.

The latest upgrade I found was ver 1.8.0 (2006) Unfortunately for the amount of money this unit cost, it does not offer constant annual upgrades. Recommendation: Try Magellan, Tom Tom, or Garmin. These units now offer "voice address input" which is a nice feature to keep your hands on the wheel when driving.

The update is corrupted. Unfortunately you will have to wipe everything to recover it. Start by making sure the Optical unit used has had it's laser lens cleaned, the pc used is not connected to the internet and no other program is running when you install the update and reinstall the latest Navteq update once more time.
If this doesn't work then the next step is to reload the firmware

and reinstall the DVD update one more time. If even now the you get the error then the hard disk inside it has died and will have to be replaced.
The only thing left - send it to Lowrance to replace the disk and reinstall everything.
