Wi Fi question

No, but it is based on an IEEE 802.11 standard. Wi-Fi Protected Access is derived from the forthcoming IEEEi draft standard and is designed to be forward-compatible with that standard when it is published.

What is WDS?

Wireless Distribution System (WDS) allows you to make a completely wireless infrastructure. Normally, the access points must be connected with a wire (LAN). These access points create cells allowing a wireless connection. The WDS feature allows the access points to be wirelessly connected. This feature is normally used in large, open areas where pulling a wire is restricted or not cost effective and in residential circumstances. If the structure utilizing an access point is too large to cover using one AP, a second AP would be used as a wireless repeater. The WDS has forwarding functionality for extending the range of an AP. By setting up an extended service set (ESS) between access points. Stations can intersect with any AP of this ESS and move between the coverage of both APs while the higher layer network connection remains intact.

How does the wireless range of 54g compare to 802.11b and 802.11a?

The range of 54g products is the same as 802.11b. They both operate in the same 2.4GHz frequency. Both 54g and 802.11b have better wireless range than 802.11a.

What is the status of the IEEE 802.11g ratification process? What might change?

The 802.11g committee has settled on all of the major technology decisions for the specification. The document is essentially being reviewed to clarify sections that may have more than one interpretation. Any changes are expected to be minor only and may require a software update.

Range

All wireless products are subject to radio interference. The performance is a direct result of the operating environment. Other products that use the same frequency can drastically reduce the performance of the wireless product. Try changing the operating channel or moving the wireless Access Point.

Really see 54 Mbps with 54g?

As with any wireless protocol, 54g has overhead associated with it that limits performance. While signaling data rates of up to 54 Mbps may be achieved, like most shared media (e.g. Ethernet) throughput will be significantly less. There are two scenarios for 54g performance. In an environment with only 54g clients, throughput can exceed 24 Mbps. This performance is equivalent to that of 802.11a, although 54g is usually available over a greater range. The second scenario is where 802.11b clients are present. RTS/CTS flow control must be used to allow 802.11b clients to recognize and establish communications with 802.11g access points. This leads to delays in transmission and drops peak throughput to about 10 Mbps. 54g performance is still well in excess of the maximum measured speeds of 4-5 Mbps for 802.11b. The use of RTS/CTS is important because it provides determinism to the wireless network, ensuring a minimum bandwidth for each user. Like Ethernet, 802.11 LANs normally use a ג?œcarrier sense media accessג? mechanism to signal transmission without asking for permission from the network. As the network becomes highly loaded, collisions occur more frequently and the network can become saturated with packet retransmission attempts that eventually make it impossible for any data to get through. RTS/CTS provides a more formalized flow-control mechanism that avoids this problem.

Performance

54g products will perform differently depending on whether or not there is 802.11b traffic in the immediate environment. The rules-of-thumb for throughput are: In an 802.11g-only environment, throughput will be between 4-5 times the throughput of an 802.11b network. The maximum throughput can exceed 24 Mbps. In an environment that includes 802.11b devices, throughput will be about double the throughput of an 802.11b network. The maximum throughput can exceed 10 Mbps. In addition, all 54g radios have better sensitivity than current 802.11b radios, and 54g provides outstanding coverage in its 802.11b compatible mode.

Why isn't this just called IEEE 802.11g?

The IEEE 802.11g standard is nearly complete, but it is technically a draft amendment not a standard. The IEEE prohibits vendors from declaring compliance to standard until it has gone through the specification writing, review and sign-off process required for ratification. 802.11g is already in the final stages of its review process prior to adoption as an IEEE Standard.

What is the difference between 802.11g and 54g?

54g implements the latest draft of the IEEE 802.11g specification. The two primary distinctions between 54g and 802.11g are: 1) 54g is designed to enable 54 Mbps connectivity. The 802.11g draft specification makes 54 Mbps connectivity optional, and simply requires up to 24 Mbps connectivity to comply with the specification. 2) 54g products are based on the same wireless LAN chipset, which means they are interoperable. Because the standard is not final, it is not yet possible to test for 802.11g interoperability.

Mtv music generator detecting directx 7

ok... so I've now installed this on my new pc that i built... first in order to get it to install at all you must download DirectX 7.0 and right click to "--(edit compatibility settings to windows 98/Me and run as administrator)--" remember this as well be doing it a few times. once you do that install DirectX 7.0 and say yes to all. now that this is installed take the .iso file you have and burn it to a cd or DVD-r, once burned you need to go to my computer and right click on the cd/DVD drive, select open (NOT open autoplay), inside the disc menu i want you to go to 2 files... "setup" and "start" need to also have their compatibility settings changed to the above settings. now that these are set stay in the cd menu and double click "setup" this will take you through the setup procedure. after the setup procedure is finished do not view the notes, and continue back to the desktop. now from your start menu load the game and it should run

I cannot connect to the

you need more than a wireless adapter to connect to the internet......
you need a wireless network to connect to. in cafe's and pubs the owner sometimes sets up a WiFi network that their patrons can connect to, however most people have to provide their own.

to get to the internet , you will need.

A broadband connection (ADSL / Cable) this normally comes with a standard NON wifi modem
A WiFi Router (including ADSL / Cable Modem) depending on what you have already.

then to link a remote PC / Laptop to this network, A suitable wireless adapter ( like your belkin adapter)

it is a common misconception that a wireless adapter is all you need (advertising is vague)

How do I Reset my Belkin wifi Extender?

Using the reset button The location of your range extender's reset button will vary depending on its model. The reset begins once you press and hold thereset button for at least 10 seconds while the range extender is powered ON. The Status Light on the the range extender will momentarily flash and will then begin to blink. When the light becomes solid again, the reset is complete. Using the web-based setup page If using the physical button does not work, you can access the range extender's web-based setup page and do the reset from there. Before you begin:
  • Make sure that the wireless computer or device you're using to access the web-based setup page is connected to the same network as the range extender.
  • You need to identify the IP address that your router has assigned to your range extender. Locate this by accessing your router's DHCP Client table. Once you have the range extender's assigned IP address, use it to access your range extender's web-based setup page.
  • Alternatively, you can enter "http://192.168.206.1" in the web browser's Address bar if your range extender has NOT detected a DHCP server in your network.
Step 1: In the web-based setup page of the range extender, go to Utilities and select Restore Factory Defaults. QUICK TIP: You may be prompted to log in with your range extender's administrator password. If you have not set any, simply leave the field blank and click on Submit. Step 2: Click on the Restore Factory Defaults button. Your Belkin range extender should now be restored to its factory default settings.
