Lacie External Drive won't turn on (blue Light doesn't go on)

Inside the LaCie D2 250GB (300770) external harddrive's case, is a 250GB IDE (PATA) harddrive that is 3.5 inches across in width. A desktop computer sized harddrive. (May be a Western Digital WD25000JB)The harddrive plugs into a small circuit board, (Bridge board), and the circuit board has a USB port on it.Using this Western Digital Passport for an example,http://www.xbitlabs.com/misc/picture/?src=/images/storage/wd-passport-250gb/p3.jpg&1=1Scroll down to the second photo, and left-click on it. The case of the external harddrive is shown open. Inside is a 2.5 inch laptop sized harddrive. An aluminum tape strip covers the small circuit board, attached at the back of the harddrive.The second photo down on this page, shows you the small interface circuit board, that the harddrive plugs into, with the aluminum tape removed.http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/storage/display/wd-passport-250gb_2.html(Another design has wires coming from the small circuit board, to an interface the harddrive plugs into )It is this small circuit board that goes bad in a LaCie. QUITE common.Solution?Simple. 1) Obtain a 3.5 inch IDE external enclosure2) Remove the 3.5 IDE harddrive from the LaCie's case.3) Install the harddrive out of the LaCie into the external 3.5 IDE enclosure.An example of a 3.5 IDE (PATA) external enclosure,http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1733195&CatId=2779For additional questions please post in a Comment.Regards,joecoolvette

LaCie drive won't turn on (blue light doesn't go on)

I doubt your hard drive is dead, even if your HD was dead the blue light would go one. It has to be the internal controller.. Your best bet is to get a HD enclosure and put your old drive in there. I've burned through 3 Lacie cases, all with similar problems..

Won't turn on

If this is an external drive you can try buying a new external enclosure and pull the drive out of the LaCie and putting it in the new enclosure. If it still doesn't work then the drive is bad and needs to be replaced.

This drive does not appear on my desktop anymore.

Welcome to Fixya.

If your computer does not recognize the hard drive, here are few fixes you may want to try:
  • Disconnect the hard drive and reboot the computer. Reconnect the hard drive.
  • Connect the hard drive via the USB port on the back of your computer.
  • Use a different cable or if this has a firewire interface, use the firewire if you have a firewire port. If this works, then the USB connection is failing.
  • If the drive has been formatted, please make sure that it was formatted correctly. Refer to your user manual.
  • Try connecting the hard drive to another computer and see if the recognizes it. This will let us know if the original computer has a USB port problem.
Hope this helps.

All the best!

My LaCie hard drive's light

click start control panel administrive tools ,computer management ,device manager look through all of your devices if you see a yellow question mark?or exclamation mark ! or red x
right click to reinstall drivers or
if you can see your usb but its not working
ports(com&lpt)right click update driver
sometimes the wires inside the cable will be damaged due to bending or stretching or placing heavy equipment upon the cable,
just replace the cable of the hard disk, when you plugged the external disk drive you got that windows could recognize the USB device change the cable everything should work fine again,

check the USB leads that attach to the motherboard usually red-white-green-black make sure they are securely seated and have no dust build up on them dust will cause static and a lot of unforeseen problems also make sure the computers Ram and Cmos battery are securely seatedif this fails to fix the problem you might have to install a usb 2 or 3 card they are cheap and easy to install you can buy these on Ebay very cheap hope this helps

How do i transfer my data from my old la cie 80

Connect both drives to the computer at the same time. If you don't have enough USB ports, connect one to a USB port and the other to a Firewire port. Open a file management window (Explorer in Window, Finder in Mac OS) for each drive. Click and hold the left mouse button (only mouse button on most Mac models in the window for the 80 Gig drive and drag across several folders/files to select them. Release the mouse button, then click on and drag the selected group to the new drive window. When this copy operation is done, repeat with another group of files.

You could select (-A or -A) and drag everything on the old drive at one time, but sometimes the system will bog down on copying large amounts of data (greater than 4-8 GB at a time).

I did, and after a round iof idiotic scripted replies I got to a smart CSR who sent me a NEW power supply. Hey Presto! The drive is back and working perfectly, no data lost!!!

Mine laptop does not see the device at all.

Windows needs to detect the device first before it can install the driver. Unplug the harddrive, reboot the computer, make sure you can connect to the Internet, and allow Windows to detect the device and search for a driver. If it can't find one locally, it will search the Internet for one - check the box that allows this when prompted. If it cannot install a driver, you will have to go to the LaCie website and download it from there.

Lacie drive runs when plugged into the computer

An external storage-device has four major components:

* the USB cable

* the power-adapter

* the disk-drive inside the enclosure

* the USB-to-disk-drive adapter inside the enclosure.

One of these components has failed.

Try a different USB cable.

Try connecting to a different USB port on your computer.

Try connecting to a USB port on a different computer.

Take a "multi-meter" and measure both the voltage and amperage output from the AC adapter, and compare with the specifications on the label on the adapter.

Open the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive, and then connect it as a "slave" disk-drive in a desktop computer, to see if it works at all.

Purchase a new, compatible, disk-drive, and install it in the enclosure, to "revive" your external storage device.

Get the part-number and serial-number from the label on your disk-drive, and access the manufacturer's web-site, and use "check warranty status", to see if they will replace the device, at minimal cost to you.

The drive won't mount. has a fast blinking light.

The external storage device has several major components:

* USB cable

* external power-supply

* disk-drive inside the enclosure

* USB-to-disk-drive adapter inside the enclosure.

Try a different USB cable.
Try a different USB port on your computer.
Try a USB port on a different computer.

Take a multi-meter, and measure the output voltage/amperage of the power-supply,
and compare with the specifications on the label of the power-supply.

Open the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive, and attach it as a "slave" drive in a desktop computer, to see if bypassing the USB-to-disk-drive adapter bypasses the problem.

Look at the label on the disk-drive, for manufacturer, product-number, serial-number, and manufacture date. Access the manufacturer's web-site, and use "check warranty status" to see if the warranty still is valid. If so, the drive can be replaced, at minimal cost to you.

Buy a new, compatible, disk-drive, and install it in the enclosure, to "revive" your external storage device.

Search online for a professional "data recovery service". For a significant fee, they can repair your disk-drive, just long-enough to copy your files to a new disk-drive.

Note that W.D. has a "Customer Loyalty" program. Buy a new W.D. disk-drive through the W.D. web-site, at a significant discount.

It seems that you have a problem with the disk-drive inside the case. If it still is under warranty, exercise the warranty to get it replaced.
If not, then disassemble the case, and remove the disk-drive.
Connect it as a "slave" disk-drive inside a desktop computer,
to see if it can be read. If not, then it is "dead".
You could buy an identical disk-drive, and put it inside the case,
to construct a "new" external disk-drive.
