Nikon FM10 will only release shutter with cable

Hello Blair, I too like old school camera, mine are the N2000, N6006, N80, and F100. First without film in the camera I would attempt to release the shutter. If it does then there is something going on with the film transfer causing a bind. However, If it continues not to release the shutter I would put the FM10 on the shelf then go to KEH.com for another. Just now checked KEH.com, 2014-05-26, a FM10 in EX condition is $89, EX+ condition $99. That would be a much better move than repairing yours and less expensive. Cordially

I have taken 2 rolls of film to be developed and

Hi Carrie, A number of things could be the cause, camera and processing. If it is C41, negative film, we will rule out processing. Another thing is your camera may not be setting the exposure correctly. Are you setting the exposure manually or automatically? With the camera in automatic exposure open the back, point to a bright spot press the shutter, do you see light? Then Set the camera to one second, and at the widest aperture, say f2.8, open the back press the shutter, now do you see light? Depending on the results you will need to decide if the camera is worth repairing or a new/used one is in your future. Cordially

If the "edge numbers" are present on the developed film it is not a processing error. Most likely the film is not advancing, film was not loaded properly of the shutter is not working.

Where is serial number nikon fm 10

I can't speak to the FM10 specifically, however nikon has a few standardized positions for the serial number. It may be embossed in in small numbers on the metal at the top back above the film door. Or on the bottom. If you can't find it, I would go to the Nikon USA website. You can e-mail there support department by following this link: Contact Nikon Customer Service Call Nikon Technical Support

Okay, so this may seem

This sounds like the shutter or mirror is sticking or the guide tracks are gummy. You may just need to clean and re-lube it to make it behave. I did have this problem once after filing outside and the condensation after it warmed up was all it took to do weird things. Take the lens off and look to see if the mirror is flipping up smoothly or the shutter is moving smooth. You may need to set it on a long exposure time to slow it down enough to see. It will loo sort of like it hesitates in one spot. If you are not comfortable fixing that then talk to a camera store they should be able to get you in touch with a camera tech who can do this.

A lens cleaning to remove fungus can be quite expensive. If it is a consumer lens or a cheaper lens then often it can be cheaper to buy a used or sometimes even new lens than for a cleaning of fungus.
As for the shutter - it probably needs to be replaced. It is possible it could be repaired, usually replacement is the better option. Different service centers will charge different amount for this.
But often it is worth it vs buying a new camera.

This is typical of having left the multiple exposure lever set to the on position. It's fairly easy to set it accidentally and it's the small supplementary lever on the outside (right- as viewed from behind) edge of the hub of the film advance lever. See page 11 of the user manual (free download here)

If this is not your problem, then please add a follow-up comment and I'll provide other options for you. But if I have fixed your problem then plea
