The issue definitely sounds thermal. You may want to take it to a shop to get a cleaning, or you may try using compressed air to blow the dust out of it yourself. If the machines has been locking down, then you are overheating your cpu. But, the issue may not be the system. You COULD have a defective LCD backlight or inverter. Your best option is to get it tested in a pc shop or call gateway for assistance.

Try removing your RAM cards leaving only 1 at a time in a try to boot until you figure out which RAM card is causing it. Sometimes bad RAM can cause issues like this.
If that doesn't work, try unplugging the power from the tower, and then open up the case and remove the CMOS battery which is on the main board (motherboard). It's a little flat round battery. Leave it out for 30 seconds or so, then put it back in, close your case, and try to boot up. What this does is clears the CMOS so it will be set to default bios settings. After you do this, it may show a picture on the screen, and then you can go back into your bios settings and set anything you need to back up. Or you can just load "Optimized Defaults" and then press F10 to save the settings and reboot.
I hope this helps. If not, let me know and I'd be glad to further assist you.
Best Regards,
James
