All M700 CPUs are SMT (Surface Mounted Technology) = soldered onboard. You have to replace the whole mobo if you wanna upgrade. Suggest you get the whole bottom piece from eBay - easiest way for upgrade! 

 

The mobo also has a VR sub-board which I was told is different between PII->PIII 500mhz, PIII 600mhz -> PIII 750mhz, and PIII 800mhz-> PIII 1Ghz. So better replace the entire lower piece - lowerfixer.

Hard Drive Installation Instructions 40 gig IDE DRIVE

1. Shut down the computer and remove Battery Pack and AC adapter.
2. Locate Hard Drive compartment on the front panel, just left of the head phone jack.
3. Turn Notebook upside down.
4. Remove the one torx screw that is securing the hard drive. (A security screwdriver was provided with the computer.)
5. Push down on the hard drive bezel on the front of the hard drive.
6. Lift the bezel up 90 degrees to create a handle. Pull the hard drive out of the hard drive bay.
7. Remove the 4 black screws at each corner and lift off the black tray.
8. Gently remove the silver bracket and connector.
9. Place connector on new hard drive.
10. Place the black tray on the HDD. When looking at the hard drive with the label up, the black bezel goes along the left side of the hard drive.
11. Replace the 4 black screws from step 7.
12. With the hard drive bezel pulled down, slide the hard drive into the hard drive bay.
13. Push up on the hard drive bezel to secure the hard drive in the bay.
14. Secure the hard drive bay by replacing the screw from step 4.
15. Replace the battery pack and all cables

There is no licence key only for MS word.

You will have to get a licence for MS Office that will include Word, Excel, powerpoint on it. You can download the software form MS website and buy a licence key.

Please not you will have to pay for the licence key.

Hi, you need to go onto microsoft site and purchace a key.
Once you have bought one, the key will be sent to your email and you can then use it, but DON'T lose the key.
If you have downloaded the Office trial, burn it to disc and write the serial key on it.

This mean the copy of the windows you are using may not be genuine. Have you upgraded your windows operating system from the one you got on this machine.
There is nothing much you can do , without the cd. But you can try the following workaround if it works

Mr Gates and crew are quite stingy about their programs so you should get your disks back from whomever you gave them to. Or bite the bullet again and make another purchase.

Alternately you could get Open Office.

The product installation key is in the documentation that came with the MS Office CD.
If you have lost it then you will need to purchase a copy of MS Office to get the product installation key.

For an alternative free program, OPEN OFFICE is a full-featured office suite that's compatible with Microsoft Office.

There are several possibilities...but the most common is that it asks to press F1 to get into bios and set the basic system like date and hour...My advice if it asks this when you boot..is to press f1..than in the BIOS settings choose the optimal factory defaults .( cause that might be other parameters not set proper) and after that ..press F10 to save changes..and enter to confirm and exit ...after that set the date and time from windows cause it is much easier..
If this is not happening all the time ..follow it and see if it happens after you drain the battery and it is turning off when it is on accumulator ..this means that the BIOS battery is dead and every time it gets without any external power source it will basically act like when you flash the BIOS by jumping or removing the battery ...CHANGE bios battery cause is dead..

Because Grub has to fit in a small space on the disk, there is no room for helpful error messages, but 'Error 18' translates as 'Selected cylinder exceeds maximum supported by BIOS'. In other words, your BIOS - which initializes hardware - is unable to handle a hard drive this large. Windows is able to boot because the Windows partition is at the start of the distro's disk, within the area handled by the BIOS. This is not a limitation of Linux, which hasn't even started to load, but your hardware. You would see the same problem if you tried to install two versions of Windows, say 98 and XP. It was the BATTERY all along !!!!! Incidentally the new battery bought mail order from China was no good as it would not boot-up the laptop. The curious thing was that if the laptop was booted-up using mains power, the Chinese battery would then last long enough to play an entire feature film and more! The "Tech Guys" test battery was also no good and the technicians at that well known computer store claimed that the laptop was faulty, WRONG! Eventually I bought a scrap laptop of a similar type with a view to swapping the power controller board. The scrap laptop happened to have a battery fitted so the "scrap" battery was tried. Voila! all came good! After THREE dud batteries (including the test battery at the computer store) the problem was solved. One can surmise that during the boot-up, computers take a heavy power draw. One can also surmise that the Lithium Ion batteries have current limiters built-in in order to prevent them from catching fire. If the current limiter is set too low the laptop will not boot. Those 2.8 GHz Pentium 4s were always renowned as hungry power-guzzlers and that was the problem. The sad thing was that once it was all fixed-up, defragged and memory maxed-out, it got stolen in a burglary. Shame as it was a really good machine. These days I ONLY buy crappy low powered computers as why donate an i5 or i7 machine to your local drug addicts?
