There may be other screws holding the top and bottom of the laptop together. Sometimes under the keyboard, so you may need to take the keyboard out to see the screw(s).
Actius al27 system recovery
The D drive is a partition on the factory original hard drive When you installed XP from a cd, it may have changed the partition to make it one large drive and if that is the case then anything on the D drive is gone as is the designation for the D drive. There is no way to get in back without ordering the recovery disk from the manufacturer and if it is an old operating system like XP, you are out of luck

How to upgrade memory
You need a 512MB
PC2700 DDR 333MHz SO-DIMM for a laptop (200-pin). The
manufacturer I think doesn't specifically support anything over 512MB. But the RAM is standard and I doubt there is any need to buy it directly from Sharp. The laptop only has one upgradable bay so you may not be able to upgrade past 1.25 GB.
One of the memory covers is not removable, if I remember correctly, that is the one under the keyboard. So the one you update is a panel on the bottom.
Removing files from a dead lap top
If the computer is dead the only way to recover the files would be to remove the hdd & install it as a secondary hdd in another system in order to copy the files. After you are sure all your data is copied you could then either reformatt & keep as a storage drive in other system or remove. You'll need the proper cables as most laptop hdd's just slide into a built in port on the laptop's mb. Hope this helps.
USB Ports on AL27 only work with printer and external hard drive.
I fixed the problem by going to "Device Manager," then to the "Universal Bus". Under "Universal Bus" are a list of the individual USB ports. You have to delete each one individually. When you delete each one, a window opens up which gives you various headers; select "drivers" and hit "uninstall". When you hit "uninstall", windows will ask if you want to proceed. Select "Yes". You'll then get a "warning" that the computer may not work correctly if do this procedure. You want to proceed with the deletion of each Universal Bus port. Once you've removed the Universal Bus ports, then reboot windows. Windows will detect the individual Bus ports and find new drivers for them. Once the drivers are installed (automatically by Windows), the USB ports will be operational.
Sharp Actius AL27 pixel problems
From what you described, it seems as though your LCD panel is going bad or the inverter board is bad. Does it change colors if you were to reposition (tilt) the LCD back and forth in either direction?
Wireless adapter
navigate to device manager. look for the unknown device with an exclaimation mark on it. right mouse click and update the drivers..navigate to your cd room where the driver resides and install it manually.
Keyboard randomly stops working
If this only occurs on battery power and your battery only holds a 10 minute charge? And your keyboard is external (PS2, or USB) it draws power from that battery (even the OEM keyboard does) and is probably glitching on you for lack of power. That's of course if I have understood you correctly?
Good luck.
Problem with the battery.
Laptop batteries are notorious for having short life spans if not 'babied' correctly. Similar to car batteries, discharging and recharging can only last for so long, until they, without notice, stop holding a charge. This is for batteries acroos the board, whether Acer, IBM, Black or White, they just don't last very long. They are made as a consumable. The BIOS trick may be true for some, but not for all issues. To update the BIOS, one has to visit their respected Notebook manufacturer's website, usually under 'Support' or 'Downloads' section and check to see whether you have the most current version. If one does not have the most current, download either the floppy version (if floppy disk drive available), or the executable one to your PC. The floppy type will automatically (usually) format and created the BIOS or 'firmware' update disk of your choosing. Full instructions are usually on the support site.
