Hey, if you're in the UK you can ring tech support on 0208 747 5949 - they're really good.
Have you got the advance switch set to ON on the back of the device?

Edirol ua-5 flashing power light flashing

Be aware that SCMS "prohibited" recordings will trip this flashing light, and will not output. You will have to make an analog copy.

I have my edirol linked up to my mac, am getting sound from my monitor speakers, but cant get any sound out from my headphones. It's causing me sues, as I'm trying to record vocals. any ideas?

Hello. Sometimes the USB voltage is not enougth. Try connect the usb cable into another USB port, preferring the rear panel connectors. The UA25 drivers must be installed previously.
