Hp laserjet 4L

If you have cleaned the paper feed rollers, and your sure the fuser is turning and your cartridge is ok then, the drive motor on these have a white plastic gear that cracks and allows it to slip on the shaft of the motor. I might still have some of the gears here. I fixed some by apoxying the gear on the shaft and some by flipping the gear on the shaft. Wouldnt spend a lot of time with it. a new laser 4 times as fast is advertised here regularly for less than $80.00

How do I remove the printer cover? One of the hinges has broken!

Pop the toner door and remove those 2 silver screws. Remove the toner and cassette tray. Gradually from the rear, pull and lift the cover from its corners and slowly lift this upper cover off printer. The 4L is pretty easy, unlike the 4P that you must remove the connection plug on its side cover.

My HP LaserJet 4L printer just makes a grinding sound-won't print

That printer has a gear on the motor that cracks. You can fix it with a new or used motor. Or get a different machine on craigslist. Thank you, Steven 805-520-3003

It's al black horizontal lines/smudges over the printed page. How to cean this?

Black Horizontal Lines are normally caused by a Light Burnt Drum. The drum in built into the toner cartridge for this machine so replacing the cartridge will fix the problem.

How do I clean my HP Laserjet 4L printer?

There are two ways of cleaning the HP 4L's:
  1. Purchase laser cleaning sheets.
  2. In your user manual there is a section that instructs you to create your own cleaning sheets.
This will clean toner off the transfer roller and the fuser areas. Additional cleaning can be completed with canned air and the specialized cleaning towels also available for purchase. Remove toner cartridge and carefully wipe the interior of any toner or paper debris. DO NOT USE ORDINARY PAPER OR CLOTH TOWELS! These can leave debris in the printer and contaminate the transfer roller causing very poor quality prints.

Won't print from computer

Try borrowing another suitable printer lead and test with that. If the printer can do a self test, it is likely the printer is not the problem. If that does not work, if you can, use another printer with your computer - but set it up first. Failing that come back for more help

HP LaserJet 4L quit working It's connected to my PC and it's on. All 4 lights are on; 2 green and 2 orange. When I try to print, the paper goes through but nothing is printed on the paper.

Empty cartridge maybe? Otherwise it's simple: selt-test page(by printer button) printed ok - it's outer problem. Self-page is blank - it's inner problem. And so on... use Golden Section method

I have a customer which is running a old DOS PC using Parallel I/O with a down HP LJ 4L needs a DC Controller PCB which I cannot find. Can you use any type Printer in the series, such as 4ML, 4P or 4

In general, yes. Some model-specific features won't work with other models, of course. For example the 4P does PostScript while the 4 does not. But as long as the customer confines himself to basic printing, the 4L driver should work properly with any of the 4-series printers.

My HP Laserjet 4L has started jamming paper when I try to print more than one page.

Here is some tips to avoid paper jam..
  • If your printer has a paper tray do not fill the tray to capacity. If you're encountering frequent paper jams, reduce the amount of paper you place in the tray each time it is filled.
  • Make sure you or the tray feeding the paper into the printer is aligned properly and the slider used to hold the paper in place in the tray is snug with the paper. Many printers have sliders that allow different types and sizes of paper to be fed into the printer. If the slider is not properly positioned it can cause paper jams.
  • Use standard office paper; folded paper, paper with labels, and specialty paper such as hard bound paper can often cause paper jams. If you're uncertain with what paper you should use with your printer your printer documentation will list the paper compatible with your printer.
  • Do not mix the paper you're feeding into the printer at one time. If you need to change the paper or size of paper being used removed any other paper currently in the printer before inserting the new paper.
  • If your printer uses a slot or tray for the paper make sure to not push the paper too far into the slot or tray.
  • Examine the printer for any previous stuck paper in the printer. Previous paper jams, torn paper, printing labels or other foreign objects in the printer can cause reoccurring printer jams.

Printer driver

I came across this type of problem when windows 7 first came out. At that time there were no available drivers for this printer and the solution was to get a new one. Technology evolved shortly after and I saved this solution in case. LaserJet model specific printer drivers are currently available within the Windows 7 operating system. Installation of these drivers can be performed via Devices and Printers , formerly known as the Add Printer Wizard. If the model specific driver that you are looking for does not appear in the list of available printers, clicking the Windows Update button underneath the list of available printers may provide additional drivers to choose from. Requires opt-in to Microsoft Windows Update and internet connection. In windows update select 300 DPI printing as that is all the 4L supports. Hope this helps.

I had this problem at work. We went from a PCL 6 driver to a Universal PCL 5 driver and it worked fine printing multiple pages. And has ever since. I would check your driver first and see if it can be updated. If so, update it and try again. If not or updating doesn't work, try a different driver, especially if you are using a PCL 6 on a 32-bit or an XP machine. Best of luck to you.

Lines on printed pages

That's a real old model. Might need this cleaned by a service technician. Before that, buy some cleaning sheets for laser printers at Staples, etc and run one through a few times. If that doesn't work, I would find a good printer shop.

Hello I have a Laserjet 4L which has worked

You have a broken drive motor gear. This small gear fits the main drive motor and when they get brittle they crack. the cracked gear can't turn and mesh with the rest of the gears so they bind and then jump, that's the sound you are hearing. This is what the gear looks like:buddymc_0.jpg
Here is a link to get information on one. http://www.ccl-la.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=24_41_49&products_id=61

I hope this helps, if so please rate our solution.
