I cannot get the scanner to work on my HP7410

Hi gensec177.. regarding with your scanner, some of the old printers like the one that you have right now is no longer compatible with the new operating system. most of the time if you have an old all in one machine it will going to work as a plug and play. here's some other worked around.. if your printer is connected on your windows seven through usb cable..try to scan using the "paint" application..you will see the paint when you click on the start menu and type on the search box - "paint" and then there's a drop down arrow on the upper left hand side. just click that and choose "scanner or camera" then it'll do it..if you have any other question dont hesitate to reply..

I have an HP 7410

Sounds like the mainboard inside of the printer is bad.
Some things to verify this, make sure the cartridges that your using are original HP Cartridges and NOT 3rd party ones, even though 3rd party can work, its hit and miss and can cause sporadic problems.
If that doesn't fix it then try this troubleshooting step:
Reset process is........unplug power cable from the back of the unit, without turning it off, wait for about 10-15 secs & then while plugging in the power cable press & hold # key & the 3 key.....once u can see the unit powering on let the buttons go. Its important that you do the plugging in of the power cable while your holding these buttons on the printer........you will see a "partial reset" being displayed on the printer.
If that does not do the trick you can try the same with the # key & the 6 key on the printer. This is a semi full reset.

If u still get the error msg its a hardware issue with the printer & cannot be fixed with regular troubleshooting.

At that point unless the printer is under warranty I would replace it because parts aren't available for it.

I have a HP L7580

First try to power cycle the printer by turning it off and turning it back on. If this does not help, unplug the printer for 15-20 seconds and plug it back in. if this does not help, a HP employee recommended this for a networked printer (meaning connection is through network not directly to PC):

If you installed via network, then you need to send the 'scan to' settings to the printer to update the LCD list Depends on the hp software, follow following steps to update the 'Scan To' settings to the printer: HP Solution Center or HP Director Click Settings , and then click Scan Settings . Depending on your software version, click the option available to you: Scan to... Setup Button settings Click Scan to... Setup . Continue with the on-screen instructions to create a list of destinations for scans. Try scanning again from the printer control panel.

Other than that, the only solution that seems to work for most is to perform a factory reset. Here are the steps:

Settings/Tools/Restore Factory Default or

Setup/Tools/Restore Factory Default

This is done through the menus on the printer itself.

The error message, "remove and

Common failure of this model is the the tension spring popping loose from the side of the cartrige holder. This in turn will possibly rip or tear a hole in the encoder strip that the cartridge contacts seat to. HP says there is no fix, but I have had success repairing the same problem. You will need to remove the entire cartrige assembly (4 Torx screws) - I would recommend taking photos with your digital device for re-assembly reference. Verify damage, peal back carefully the encoderstrip, use a razor blade and carefully scrape the insulation just beyond the tear to expose a small areas of the contact lead wire that is damaged (Do this on the back of the encoderstrip only) Go to Radio Shack and purchase a circuit-writer pen, and use that to jump and repair your connection around the tare. This will need to dry for several hours. Reassemble-and GLUE this defective spring in place once and for all. Both cartriges have a spring and I would suggest you glue the other as well. My printer was out of warranty when I called HP - Needless to say this is a known defect, and was told to purchase another - This one is for HP "Your product was defective in the original design in the first place - As a former customer, I had to repair what you said was impossible. you guys are really slipping when it comes to hands on training" This printer has been in service since my repair of you design without any hassles.

My HP Officejet 7410 printer

Simple test: find some old cartridges that have worked well in this printer and put them in. If you still get the cartridge error message (not the empty one as it should) then the connection between the chips on the cartridges and the processor from the mainboard of the printer is faulty.
This can be caused only by 2 things:
1 - the data cable that connects the carriage to the board is unhooked or damaged: pull the carriage fully to the left and inspect the data cable. If it's detached or loose try to plug it back again; if it's pinched it will have to be replaced at a repair shop.
2 - if the fault is in the mainboard then the printer is dead. You could replace the mainboard but that would cost more than a new printer.
