Hi Dean, Do you mean the cartridge compartment which holds the cartridge is broken ? if so, you cannot do anything.Its time you have to look for another similar All-in-One printer in nearby store or contact HP to check if they can offer you better deal.Regards,Sean

Some basic troubleshooting tips are listed below to help determine the cause.
Check the following items :

Ensure the phone cord is plugged directly from the wall jack, into the back port of the fax machine marked "Line", "To Wall Jack", or with a wall jack symbol

Remove any other device from the line such as splitters, credit card machines, or telephone answering machines and retry.

Turn Error Correction Mode (ECM) off ,
For turning off ECM > press set up > press ok >go to advanced fax set up by using the arrow key > press ok > press arrow key go to OFF > press ok .

After these steps > try to send a fax to undermentioned number , once it is sent u will recieve a confirmatory fax in return as well .

self confirmatory no for fax 1 888 473 2963 .

or u can try to send a fax to a different local number as well.

Hi Paul,Scanner Failure usually results in Hardware Failure. However there is one step you can try. Try connecting the printer directly to wall outlet or any other power outlet and the issue should be resolved.Regards,Sean

I've been in print cartridge hell since I bought a J4580.

I spent an hour on chat with HP customer service and was able to resolve the problem by partially resetting the printer. Here's how:

• Make sure your print cartridges are installed.
• Unplug the machine, wait 20 seconds
  
• Press and hold the # and 3 keys
• Plug the machine back in
• You'll see a reset message on the machine, release the # and 3 keys
• Follow the prompts to set the language and location

Cross your fingers, hopefully your printer will print now!

You will need to open the top and look inside where the paper travels through and attempt to free any paper pieces that have gotten stuck in the pathway. You probably have a bad board in your control panel, since you are able to print from the computer.

I am posting this in the hopes that it may help other lost lambs like myself as I was unable to find this answer on my own searching the web.For the past couple of days, my happy little HP 6180 Printer has been asking for new yellow juice. I finally got the chance to go pick up a new cartridge and much to my dismay, when I installed it, I got a message saying Ink System Failure... something something... refer to documentation.Well, the documentation had no references to this kind of error. I tried everything the website suggested, unplugging it, taking out the ink cartridges, starting the whole thing up and reinstalling and the error just appeared again and again.I looked online and was dismayed to find that people said that they had gotten refurbished models sent to them because they couldn't get tech support at HP to help them... OR that they were charged big bucks for tech support.My husband took over at that point (I am normally the geek but it was a long day) he got online with a tech support person and she talked him through fixing it. Faxes are sent by the scanner. Print out the image from Paint then place the print in the scanner then fax it.
