How to check ink level
Download the HP Toolbox from HP website and run it. This has a tab for estimated ink levels.

Does not print with new ink
The HPs are notorious for not recognizing the cartridge after a few replacements in my experience. On the information screen is it saying the cartridge is not in or ink is low? You can have the machine, through the menu, do a cleaning of the heads. If this does not work then I have a low tech solution to fix the seating of the cartridge. I put a wadded up paper towel in the door to hold the cartridges firmly in place and the printer reads it fine then. I do have a different model than what you are showing but there has to be a way.

Hi There
You do not mention what operating system you use. If it is Windows Vista or Windows 7, it could be a driver problem causing this (you probably worked wit XP before). The HP 970 Printer is the best part of 10 years old, and therefor drivers might be difficult to get hold of.
By the way, the HP 970 range was one of the truly better printers HP has ever made.
Here are the download links:

The printer is only printing
hello slimavocado,
. Replaced the cartridges twice
2. Aligned and cleaned the cartridge from the
computer
3. Soaked the cartridge head in hot water,
and made sure that all three colors will bleed
out of the head
4. Cleaned the cartridge contacts with an eraser
5. Cleaned the cartridge contacts on the printer
with a brush
Thanks.

Colour has stopped printing completely
I would try a genuine hp cartridge just to check. it sounds as though there is no air in the cartridge giving the effect of sucking on an almost empty bottle of water. Usually attributed to lousy compatable cartridges.. i bet with a genuine one in there all will be well.

I entered a print job
Hello,
Click on the printer icon at the lower right hand corner of your screen.
This will bring up the print spooler dialog. Make sure the print job you want to cancel is selected.
You will find the Cancel command in the menu.
Hope this helps.

If it still do not reset itself to read the new cartridge ..try to use a different one a few times..cause the printer will only remember the last 2 cartridges regarding the ink level ..

or try a hard reset to see if the cartridge will be seen full ..(I think this happens only with refilled cartridges..

Prints pink and black only,
Suggest you uninstall the printer with the remove hadware feature, then reinstall the drivers, download them from the internet and reinstall the printer.

Deskket 970 cxi - when
While the light is on, there is still a problem. Perhaps the paper is crooked or jammed, or you may be running low on ink. Try turning it off, leave for half and hour (checking paper etc ) then turn back on, it may have got confused with too many instructions.

Print colour not consistent
Hi,
The single item in an inkjet printer that requires the most attention is the ink cartridge and usually is the cause of uneven, light and inconsistent printing problems. When such problems happen usually the ink cartridge needs to be replaced, but sometimes you may need to inspect the ink cartridges for problems. Ink cartridges can be popped out of the printhead assembly for inspection of the inkjets. if any or all of the jets are clogged, it is possible to clear them by gently wiping the face of the cartridge with a swab. A gentle squeeze of the ink reservoir can also help to unblock the clogged jet.
Hope this helps

2) Open Printers and Faxes.
3) Right Click on Printers.
4) Select Printer Properties.
5) Select Printing Preferences, and choose quality of photo print to medium
