so what CD??? CD-R recordable, CD-RW?No PC stated. NO OS stated ,wow.just DC3000 and some kind of VHS tape?My guess bad media. (CD-r)or the drive it self is bad.or as all XP are , virus infected,the spec saysTransfer, edit and burn home videos with this all-in-one external HP DVD movie writer. When you connect something to an USB port for the first time, don't hope to much. You have to be sure the computer has the correct software to recognise the hardware and can work with it. From Windows 7 and up, for all hardware that is certified with Microsoft, you can download the drivers from Microsoft. Lots of hardware is recognised when connected and will initiate a download from Microsoft. But not all hardware will do so and not all hardware is compatible (same as not certified by Microsoft from Windows 7 and up) with the new operating systems. Most things that worked fine with Windows XP and or Vista, can fail with Windows 7 and 8, because the factory that made the hardware in the first place does not ask for certification with Microsoft for their old Hardware. They only spend time and money to get their new hardware certified on the new operating systems. So to make sure your hardware is compatible with the OS. Check the manual and find out, what you have to do so it will work on your computer. If your device was working on a USB2 port, it also should work on an USB3 port, on the same computer. But don't expect another speed, because the slowest part decides the speed.

i suggest cleaning the lens and if that didnt solve the problem, change the lens completely.

When you plug it into your PC, it should auto-discover it. While connected to the internet, reply YES to let windows search for a driver at MS. If it finds one, you should be ok. If it can't find one, I'm afraid it's not going to work.

There are drivers only for Windows XP and Windows 2000 Pro.

reinstall the drivers again and your dvd device will work,no drivers go to the dell website and download them,its free

this is nothing to do with the writer, the space it is refering to is your c drive hard drive space. When a dvd burns a video or photos etc, it has to write the image of whatever you are getting it to write it to your hard drive first, then when all the files are checked and encoded it will only then burn to the dvd disc. Your problem is you do not have enough free space on your hard drive for this to happen, that is why an error is reported. A dvd needs atleast 5GB of hard drive space to encode it first then burn it so check in the properties of your C drive to see how much space you have left, a minimum of 10GB is recommended.
