The only purpose for the batteries are to hold in memory your tab stops and margins when you turn it off or un-plug the power cord. Otherwise with no batteries, it goes back to default setting for margins and no tab stops.

Because of the age of the machine, keyboards are starting to fail. The only solution is to have the keyboard replaced. new ones are not available but i have been buying refurbs for 10 years with no problems. I get mine from EBM 800-832-6522. It would help if you can find a typewriter technician to install it.

Open the upper cover, the connectors are the two flat pieces of velum that go from the top of the keyboard to the mother board, they just pull out. DickyO

Tour key board is bad. You can try this. The right keyboard connector has a group of 7 connectors bussed together cut a piece of heavy foil that width and slide it into the side of the plug to the front of the T/W covering just the 7 connectors. I've done this many times and it holds up very well. DickyO

Go to the IBM web site, select your printer model and OS type. Follow the onscreen instructions.

It should have been sent to pasture many years ago as it is 35 years old!

Check if they are on the wheel. They had a habit of spokes snapping off.
