camcorder when turned on flashes in red DEW and closes it self down. i have taken all the batteries out and replaced sometimes after a few days the camcorder will work then DEW will rea ppear and shut itself down

I had the same problem and found numerous solutions on the internet. The most common and apparently most successful was to remove the battery and give the camera a sharp whack. Didn't work for me. I tried to find a seperate CMOS battery to remove that but couldn't but your model may have one - try that. Then I found a thread at http://www.dvinfo.net/forum/sony-hvr-a1-hdr-hc-series/88013-moisture-condensation-2.html which suggested cleaning the moisture sensor on the left hand side at the very back of the tape transport mechanism. It is oblong shaped, has two solder points at its top and (in my case) a black square that should actually be a black circuit like pattern. Scroll through the aforementioned thread and you'll find photos to help you locate it. Using a cotton wool bud soaked in CD lens cleaning alcohol (you'll need a long one or small fingers :-) a couple of wipes was all that was needed to reveal the pattern. I re-inserted the cassete but still the same problem. With the camera turned on I then used a paper clip to depress the reset button (Flap open the LCD screen and you'll find it under the auto lock slider switch). The camera "re-booted" and everything worked fine! I had to reset the date and time and all my settings preferences but no big drama. Hope that helps.

Me too! The camera was working perfectly until yesterday and when I turned it on today, it selectively ignores some buttons on the screen - and pressing the "Menu" gives me nothing. I've tried to reset it through that pin hole button, but it just resets the machine back to its default.

hi, i have a HVR-A1E that uses the same mechanism and it is a real s...t, i used this cam only a few times and had same problem... i found out on blogs that is a default on those cams... i had to buy another cam to be able to read the recordings i made ! i went to this solution, i bought a FW recorder that records in real time with included battery and hard disk, because the only really sure repair is to change all mechanism (more money than buying another cam !) and must be done by a professional because the mechanism is extremely sensible to mount and adjust ! i tryied many things: let the door open for a long time and then reboot, try to move a little gear that is the responsible of the problem, putting a bit of mechanic oil, and nothing worked ! the problem comes from a little gear that have troubles to move correctly, and this gear is also activating a sensor that says to the main board, that the door is well closed or not... cheers, mich

The problem is with the S-reel. Take the tape out, remove the battery, and give it a slight bump. This usually fixes the issue for a couple of weeks. I haven't heard of any permenant fixes. I took my cam into circuit city (before they closed) twice for the same issue. Very frustrating when you don't know what the issue is.

This is a fault in the tape transport system can be caused by several problems including the transmission gear in the tape mechanism not engaging properly, a dislodged pinch roller or a defective clutch in the take-up spool and can usually be repaired fairly inexpensively. However, it's not a user serviceable problem and will need to be repaired by a qualified service technician.

Leave it in a warmish dry place for as long as it takes. Condensation on the tape mechanism will cause the tape to cling and get snarled and tangled in the drive. You also need to make sure that the tapes are completely dry. Exposure to cold then warm air will cause condensation even without any rain or other obvious wetting. If the problem does not clear up overnight, then there may be a fault with the sensor, but give it plenty of time.

Reset tour camcorder

With camera powered on try depressing the "Reset" button with a pencil/ball point pen. Then try again it may help.

- remove all from camcorder.(battery,tape and accessories and place the camcorder in a dry storage(ive tried placing it inside a rice container for a while and it helped because rice grains will absorb moisture) make sure to put the camcorder on a platform(cardboard or anything flat to place your camcorder) if you're going to place it in a rice container.its worth a try and its safe but if the problem persists i would recommend you to have you're camcorder checked and cleaned by a professional.
