otherwise i would not recommend taking the unit apart. the ribbon on the side is whats causing the problem.

The problem is a bad CCD inside the camera. I Sony was providing free service for some of their other models but failed to provide service (recall) on these models. contact Sony at 1-866-703-7669 good luck

Im thinking your tape path is out of alignment.

needs tape path alignment.

Take the battery out and turn selection switch to camera and then turn it off. Put the battery back in and its working again.
if that doesn't work try
Try smacking the side of the camera relatively hard with the palm of your hand. Eject the tape and reinsert. You may need to do this a couple of times. good luck

I have the same problem and I am hoping that when you know the answer, you would share it with me. Sorry, I do not know how either.

Sounds like your imaging block is bad or a ribbon cable came loose. You can get the service manual for $24.00 US at http://www.servicemanuals.net You will need a good jewelers screwdriver set, magnifying glasses, a steady hands and a whole lot of patience. Make lots of notes as you disassemble the unit if you ever want to get it back together. After you get it apart check for any loose or disconnected ribbon cables, especially in the area of the CCD block which is the front of the unit behind the lense. Make sure that the sound capture device setting is on USB audio.  In image mixer - click on the USB icon onthe left of the screen and then click on the wrench icon in the upper right corner of the screen.  That will bring up another window.   In this window check to be sure that the sound capture device setting is USB audio.

You need to give me the version of Image Mixer you have installed. Basically what you need to do is to connect the camera via the USB to the computer and then follow the instructions. Daniel

My capture software defaults to capture specs of 720x480x32 at 29.97 frames per second. It previews video at 360x240x32 at 29.97 fps. What resolution is your capture operating at? How about the camera?

If it were worth repairing, as a Sony agent, I would replace all of the capacitors and clean up the board then reset the mechanism and test. Probably too old being 2001 vintage.

The best thing you can do now is to take it to a specialist and get them to do the repairs. Camcorders have a lot of electronics in them and can be easily damaged if your a not an experienced repairer. You might also have to consider that this camcorder might not be repairable.

The record / playback heads probably need cleaning, using a compatible cleaning tape. Failing that, it is either damaged or broken.
