Monitor Barely readable and dark but display is correct

We have about 20 of these at work. Four of them went dark, to varying degrees, in the two years they were covered by warrantee, and were sent back to the factory for repairs. Since then, eleven more have gone dark. I finally got around to looking at them a few days ago. I have repaired five so far, and in every case it has been the same cause.
The capacitors on the inverter board are burning out. There are two 470uF, two 1500uF and a 1000uF that are not holding up.
Costs about 4 bucks for replacement parts at digikey; qtys and Part numbers are:
2 PN #493-1561-ND
1 PN #565-1664-ND
2 PN #P13124-ND
It takes about an hour, and minimal skill with a soldering iron to fix.

The monitor turns off and on repeatedly.

There are lots of reasons why it can shutdown, but happerlly none should be serious. It may be that the B+ or Power supply is too high, look for a pot near the power supply and try turning it down a bit. Also the x-ray protection may be too high, look for the X-Ray pot, found near the FBT, turn that down too. I assume your a tech and know how and where to be carefull.

It sounds like your video1.gif card settings are too high and your monitor cannot handle the settings. One way to confirm this is to boot into SAFE MODE and see if it still happpens. If it does not, then its the video card settings. If it does, then it indicates that the monitor is in need of service or replacement.Turn down the resolution and color depth settings all the way, and then increase them incrementally until it is as high as it can go until this problem starts happening again. To adjust video settings, right click anywhere on the desktop and select Properties. Then go to the settings page.If the display does not stay active long enough to make these changes, then boot into SAFE MODE and delete the video adapter from the device manager. Upon rebooting the computer, the video adapter will re-install itself with low default settings. Is the correct monitor selected in your display settings?Make sure that the correct monitor appears in Display properties. I have a ViewSonic moniter

Sorry, but i think the solder wouldn't help here. This could be the result of physical damage- kick, dropped down or smth similar. Usually there breaks the decoding matrix crystals, that are very thin, and there are 4- 8 crystal chips for the matrix. This problem solves by changing the LCD, but it costs almost as the whole screen (around 150USD or 100EUR), depends of model.

It seems to be the problem with the lamps inside the LCD screen. You have to replace one or both of them. You have to observe in what part of the screen is brighter, and how it changes in time.

Most likely problem is the video card in the computer. If there is no separate card, then it's the motherboard.

I have a similar problem (dimming) with my VE710b

The back needs taken off and check on power supply module for a couple of electrolytic caps that might be bulged and need to be replace, or just buy a new power supply and replace it, that will fix your problem.

If you are going to DIY and already try the monitor with another PC, and have proper tools and know safety precaution then please read on: Most common failures in the LCD monitors are bad capacitors (bulging top/seal or leaking) in the power supply (they should be replaced in a set), blown fuses; poor solder joints, failed inverter circuits (blown fuse, shorted transistors, shorted/open transformers), bad lamps (poor solder connections or worn out lamps). You will need to open it up and inspect the inside, see example of failed VIEWSONIC monitors to get some ideas what to look for: http://s807.photobucket.com/albums/yy352/budm/ Post back what you see inside so we can guide you further and it will help out other people in the future also.

Screen is very dark (almost black) you can barely

The inverter has failed, its probably a small component on the inverter circuit board that's at fault. You need someone competent with a soldering iron and a new component or circuit board or a new monitor.

Red color on lcd monitor comes and goes

A red color generally means a ccfl backlight is going out,
this is the bulb itself, not the inverter.

If you want to take it apart and troubleshoot and find out which bulb (this monitor has 4) just let me know and I can give you instructions in dissassembly and troubleshooting.

if the red light just comes and goes and you can live with it, I would. It may be difficult to troubleshoot if it does not show red as soon as you turn it on.
If it is the bulb, eventually the problem will get worse until it turns on for 2 seconds and kicks off.
